I'd take a retelling if it meant an awesomely animated Xemnas fight. Like if this is real and they go for an anime style, imagine if they get a damn good studio.

You think the new Disney Studios lead could bet on videogames adaptations like Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy or Fortnite after the success of Super Mario Bros, The Last Of Us, Twisted Metal, Uncharted, Free Guy, Sonic, etc??

Well, to get one thing out the way, Disney is developing an animated Kingdom Hearts movie. While years back I had heard the idea was to do something on Disney+, more recently I have heard the goal would be big screen adaptation, but as of now, these are just rumblings and nothing has been greenlit. Disney may have more of an interest on actual gaming instead of developing movies based on video games… Prince of Persia and Need For Speed were both duds for Disney.

"Disney is developing a KH movie"

"There are just rumblings and nothing has been greenlit"

These statements contradict each other ffs

Don't friggin say "Oh they're doing this" and then saying "there are just rumblings" as if you heard it around the water cooler.

Just like that tweet saying "Disney is REPORTEDLY doing this" when all you have is some guy saying "I hear they're doing this" with no proof or anything to back it up.

AND DON'T SAY "they're doing this" AND THEN GO "ehhh they're more interested in actual gaming instead of making adaptations".

We'll probably all be back here in like three years and it'll still be "I hear they're doing something"

Movies and tv shows are almost always in development before being greenlit. That part isn’t contradictory. Things like a script, story boarding, and other concept work are often done first. With tv shows, they usually even film a pilot episode. If the studio then likes what they see, they will greenlight it to actually go into full production. (Chaser can probably school us better on this topic than I can. lol.)

And Skyler seems to be saying that it is in development but the “rumblings” are whether to release it on Disney+ or in theaters.

The last part seems to reference Disney’s overall content strategy around adapting video games as that was the point of the original question. So they’re saying a KH movie is in development, but Disney doesn’t plan to start a wider effort to adapt more video games like FF, Fortnite, etc.

Ironically, water cooler type chat is how a lot of this stuff gets out. Lol

Also is DisInsider even reputable

Cuz from what I've searched...they don't seem to be.

From what I’ve seen, they are pretty reliable when it comes to Disney productions, but not so much when it comes to the other brands like Marvel. Since this would be a Disney production, they may have legit info on it. I think it’s worth noting this one isn’t behind a paywall and it doesn’t seem they are actively trying to bait the attention of KH fans for clicks either.

To clear up on how development works in America:

I've never pitched anything to Disney, but it's actually not uncommon for someone to do some preproduction work in order to properly pitch a series. Some projects are developed under programs where money is set aside specifically to get projects out of people the companies want to work with.

A pitchdeck will have as much work put into it as the person working on the pitch can afford. This will include a treatment/synopsis/concept art/ mood boards/ budget outlines/ proposed merchandise plans/ and any proof of concept they were able to make. This is often why things are in development hell. The higher-ups want to do something but getting everyone on board for a price they can all agree on is a timely process.

Disney has floated around the idea of a KH series/movie so many times over the past 20 years (we know of at least three for sure, with countless others having been rumored) that it's statistically improbable that at any given moment Disney isn't considering doing something with the property.

I just don't know that the market's there for a movie? 2024 KH isn't in the gaming zeitgeist the way 2006 FF7 was. Am I wrong on this? I just don't feel KH is in the conversation enough to justify a movie that presupposes an audience familiar with the source material.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt a KH movie will be an actual adaptation. It’ll more than likely be a very loose adaptation like Marvel films are to their source material/like how Mario was to the games, or (and frankly I do think this is far more likely) it’ll be a brand new narrative with a brand new cast or simply borrowing the cast and disregarding the games.

As much as I am a fan of the series/certain games’ stories, none of them really work for a film adaptation. So I’d definitely welcome something new or a loose adaptation.

If I wanted a 1:1, I’d just play the games or do Theater Mode.

A movie adaptation having a whole separate cast would actually be a bad way to go

Cuz when there are talks of a KH movie or show, a majority of people tend to think of something that stars Sora and such, and in terms of what's adapted people usually point to KH1 as it's the safest option.

Also hi I'm Squood and I like Saber

The only way a KH movie will bang is if it rides the wave of (lame and generic) crossover/multiverse movies that are all the rage right now. Classic characters like Aladdin, Jack Skellington, Ariel, Hercules all coming together in the same movie to fight bad guys is all it'd take. An extreme de-emphasis of the KH trappings will also be necessary. Only Sora and the Heartless would likely remain. I don't even see Riku and Kairi being part of it.

You'd all hate it for betraying the franchise, I'd find it boring, and it'd make bank

It ultimately depends on how this is bein' handled, Launch.

Whether Disney is taking the reins this time around or if they still choose to leave final decisions up to Nomura to prevent any holes in the relationship that they apparently actually care about.

I've said it in my previous post but it wouldn't be breaking the rules if Sora uses summons. Like Simba, Genie, Stitch and Mushu are all aware of other worlds.

KH3's summons aren't really summons, they could do that and have the characters sorta appear. That would be a good way to have multiple Disney characters show up in the same scene.

Or they could always have Namine erase the memories of the movie's events if they decide to bring characters in who don't know anything about other worlds.

You know what would be funny? If the Kingdom Hearts movie gets adapted in a future Kingdom Hearts video game

If they really wanted to get back to basics and have it so that Sora vs Maleficent is the final showdown (so that it's wall to wall Disney Disney Disney) and erase / save any Xehanort / Organisation world building for sequels, then I can see them resurrecting the plotline of the Princes accompanying Sora to Hollow Bastion to rescue the Princesses.

The world hopping nature of the games doesn't translate that well to a 90 minute - 2 hour run time, so things would have to be very condensed of course. Traverse Town could be built up to house a lot of the Disney characters so it feels more alive and gets around the need for excessive world hopping (and lets more recent properties be included since there's so much more beyond Disney of 2002)

Sora and the Princes building a rebellion to Maleficent and the Disney villain gang would be, I think, the easiest way to create a Kingdom Hearts movie that sheds a lot of the baggage of the series, at least to start.
