| ♥ | fun stuff~ so let's be honest! who here has actually read the whole thing all the way through? umm not me. I finished the New Testament finally last week. of course in sunday school and stuff we'd always read random verses in Mark or Luke or Corinthians or something, but never the whole entire things or the weird books no one talks about. i.e. Philemon anyone? so basically if anyone here [i'm kind of sort of looking at you Forever Atlas :x] could provide some info/links/answers to questions or something for lazy and/or probably retarded people like me so we don't have to go searching all over google for some simple ideas, that would be :awesome: and khi can learn toogevers. :D i'm about to start the Old Testament, except ones I've already read like uhh Genesis and Esther and stuff. are there any good ways to go about this, comments about any of the books? anything I should know first? that's basically it gogogo also. i made this thread for the "advancement of teh knowledgez" for ze christian faith, not to start bullshit arguments, so if someone does that i will probably cry and then maybe close it. >: and who wants to do that? meanies. learning about the religious text of christians is just as valuable to 'dem evil atheiseissts' as people of the faith. let's make the religious section productive again! k? k. |

| Silh been hit by a smooth Criminal | I've read the whole old testament, and than almost 10 years later read the whole new testament. Since your looking for general info I'm going to assume you dont' need info from the new testament since thats usually the most preached about. A couple of heads up for books you probably haven't read in the Old Testament. Welll Leviticus and Numbers deal with a lot of Levitical law( duh). Things like what the israelites could can couldn't do, (what they coudl eat, who they could marry, etc. ) If anything it helps to understand the way things were and can provide a little more insight into new testament verses as well. Isaih deals heavily in prophecy. If you want to learn about what the prophets were saying about the messiah before he even came this is a very good book to read. (I've seen people read passages from Isaih, not knowing it was from Isaih, and saying it was about Jesus) There's also song of Solomon, a long romance note. depending on the Bible you have it can be slightly confusing. One of the Bibles I have divides it up as if the man is speaking to the woman and the woman to the man and so forth. There's some very descriptive things in there that you would normally be surprised to read about in the Bible. Quote:
I can't think of anything else. unless of course you are looking for something specific

| doesn't play well with others | I guess you could say that I've read the Bible. When I was about fourteen I decided that I wanted to really understand the religion (already an Atheist at the time) and my mom gave me her old Bible, which contains both Testaments, but it's one of those life application Bibles that has everything translated into modern English with little footnotes to help stupid people who aren't able to comprehend life outside of their own time frame. And I sort of dislike that, because I feel as if I was reading somebody's interpretive propaganda and not the real, unadulterated Bible. Maybe if this thread catches on I'll run down to Border's and pick up a more traditional Bible. I'm definitely interested in giving it another look. |

Well thats an interesting point. Necessary no. if you are trying to study it and you get the relevance of the names to the stories it actually related to today. for example. here's somethign I posted inJanuary on EAF Quote:
Well all these promises that were made to the twelve tribes were made well before Israel was an actual place of land. if you read up in the book the names and the blessings he bestowed on those names actually form out the map of Israel and a little bit further out. it actually forms the shape of a mans head in a crown Where did this oil field happen to be? right where the father promised the treasure would be. now of course it wasn't necessary but if you study it will help you to understand Quote:

Now the bible I was given when I left is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay at the back of the closet somewhere... My Christian beliefs are pretty much non-exsistant now. I'd say my beliefs lean more towards Buddhism. |

| a Mean cycle, Sir | I've read the whole thing through, admittedly by force at first xD; But then you start getting into it like any other book and you just forget it's the bible in a weird way. That's how it was for me at first anyway. I also read the Picture Book Bible, which is really intended for kids, but it's pretty fun reading the bible like a comic book. Yes, like a comic book and it does exist. :D |

| none of our secrets are physical | I've read the New Testament, and started the Old Testament with Genesis and Exodus, and tried to ignore the lineage - "AND JEDEDIAH BEGOT ABDIEL x100" @_@ It's extremely interesting stuff though, (admittedly as a work of fiction as well the vessel of a religion); I'd be up for reading it along with you Reflection. | :|Your Personal|: {Jesus} | I've read it, twice over, several times in random verses and miscellaneous books. Reading the whole thing isn't very necessary for the big picture, which is about the dedication of the average christian. |

Do you want some background info on the books or pretty much what to look forward to? A plan/program to read it? Not quite sure. (forgive me, my mind is over loaded with a lot of stuff I have going on right now. So things aren't registering as easily)

For me a plan to reading it sounds good. Do you have to read everything chronologically? Cause I know there's a lot of like "lineage-y" stuff with Abraham and stuff. And is there any way to tell when a book is part of hebrew law, like does it say that? Or is EVERYTHING in the OT part of that? and oh stupid question - what's a Gentile?

| Silh been hit by a smooth Criminal | I think jut general stuff people don't usually read or know is in the Bible. sort of like what I touched on. Quote:
Here's a year long Bible reading plan: 52 Week Bible Reading Plan Generally if you want read a few chapters from the old, a few from the new. about 6 or so chapters total. I also recommend reading a chapter in proverbs a day. because there are 31 of them (you'll like #31) Most of the hebrew law books are in leviticus and numbers. it will make reference to law in other books in the OT and the NT but usually most of those questions when confusing can be easily googled. and Gentile in the Jewish culture esssentially meant anyone that's not a Jew.
