Actually, there would have been video games without Mario. However, there most likely wouldn't be any video games with the Famicom (NES).

...so Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid wouldn't have made a difference?
Also, the Famicom had in incredible amount of third-party support. Konami and Tecmo made some of the best Famicom games out there.
