I enjoy the ability to grow stronger to defeat my enemies. But because of my strengths in RPGs, all other games are much harder for me. I've played Onimusha 3...It took me so long to finally beat the game. I'll too used to the RPG style leveling up that I keep killing enemies in Onimusha 3 and not getting any stronger. It's becoming a real problem because of my classic Super Mario World on the SNES and I can't beat the first few levels.
Is it just me or does playing too much RPGs make it harder to play non-RPG games?

Is it just me or does playing too much RPGs make it harder to play non-RPG games? | It's not that way for me. Despite my username has RPG in it, my very first video game was not a RPG but a platformer. In fact, I'm better at playing platformers than RPGs. Also, I'm good at action games like Devil May Cry and Omnimusha 3. I've beat Omnimusha 3 twice and you do get stronger but you just don't get a whole lot stronger, you have to kill and gather as many demon souls and use them to enhance your armor and your weapons. If you rush through the game, then you won't be strong at all. The last time I beat it, I had my armor and weapons on both characters maxed out. I'm also good at shooters, not FPS, like Star Fox on the SNES and strat games like Bomberman and Bust A Move. So maybe you play too many RPGs and not enough of other genes?

I'm not good with platformers at all...that's why I'm an RPG fan. Fighting games don't count because Tekken, Soul Calibur and Super Smash Brothers became easy to play after a while.

Originally Posted by Heartless1990 Fighting games don't count because Tekken, Soul Calibur and Super Smash Brothers became easy to play after a while. | Clearly you only play the games on normal or a novice (easy, very easy) level. The main easy or normal arcade-style fights in fighting games usually are easy. There are obvious exceptions, such as Virtua Fighter 4 and some of the "sub bosses" from the Mortal Kombat series, but for the most part you could probably just button mash your way through them. Turning the difficulty up a little or doing another mode typically adds quite a challenge, though. Since you mentioned Soul Calibur, have you actually tried going through the mission/story (the name escapes me at the moment) part yet? In all honesty, that's the real Soul Calibur right there -- arcade and versus takes a back seat to it. A lot of those missions get really nasty once you're into it as well, and once you've finished it once, the game goes and throws a harder version of each mission at you. For Super Smash Bros. (Melee), Cruel Melee, Very Hard mode, etc., are anything but easy. So you see, no genre is really easy -- there will always be a handful of games that can give you a run for your money, even if you have to go a little out of your way to find it (which, believe it or not, is actually the case with most RPGs). If you can't find a challenge in the newer games, head back to the very basics of gaming in the Atari and Nintendo. I'm sure you'll find that games twenty or more years old can still give you a challenge, perhaps even more so than current generation games.
On the subject of RPGs "dumbing down your gaming skills," I've personally been playing RPGs near constantly since the late 90's, and they haven't affected my gaming skills in the least. I never have been good at FPS or sports games, but I can hold my own in just about any other genre. Or that is to say, I can typically beat any "playable" game I play without too much trouble on their default difficulty settings. I've recently become interested in improving my skills in general though, and have been seeking out the hardest challenges available as, in my opinion, games have become far too easy to suit the needs of the younger gamers and casual players. I'm currently in the process of finishing God of War's God Mode, which I must say isn't nearly as insane as I was expecting, but is certainly hard enough to keep me on my toes at all times.

I don't think it's so much the RPGs' fault, as the fact if you stop playing something for a while, your skills will stagnate and degenerate. You don't notice this if you haven't played any RPGs in a while, since RPGs require time and planning rather than skill.

I'm good at most types of games except racing games. The only fighting game I'm good at is SSBM.

classic non-leveling games
| Hahaha, sorry, but there's no such thing as a non-leveling up RPG. That's the basics of all RPGs.

What section are they in on gamespot? Or Ign.com?
If Zelda is proven not to be an RPG, then i'll start to doubt if KH is either...
