Sony Announces A Super Smash Bros. Clone That Will Feature Nathan Drake, Kratos And Others

Big PlayStation 3 game announcement tomorrow, exclusive to Paul Gale Network.

Earlier today, GameRant reported that the Paul Gale Network had a big Sony reveal coming to us. In the initial post Paul Gale had put three hints which happened to be three images of him dressed in different attire: Martial arts uniform, James Bond tuxedo, and Tron. The hints themselves were somewhat vague and didn’t seem related but that was probably the point. Today the big reveal was that there was going to be a Sony equivalent of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl heading towards the Playstation 3 soon. With the rise of the fighting game community and the release and upcoming release of several fighting games (Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Dead or Alive 5) I’m surprised we haven’t heard about this sooner.

The game plays on a 2D plane according to Paul Gale and will feature a lot of the characters we’ve come to love on the Playstation console such as: Kratos, Sly Cooper, Nathan Drake, Fat Princess, Parappa, Sweet Tooth, and Rico (Killzone). I’d also expect to see Cole from Infamous, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Solid Snake and hopefully Crash Bandicoot just to name a few.
The gameplay style will cater to people who like the Smash Bros. series and that also goes for the stages as well. Paul states the the stages will be “vibrant and varied” and will take inspiration from popular playstation games such as Jak and Daxter. Much like Smash Bros., there will also be random objects spawning into the levels throughout the match.
This game is sounding to be a lot like Smash Bros. which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There hasn’t been a style of game like this in several years and this could very well tide players over until the release of the new Smash Bros. on Nintendo’s Wii U. This is also the style of game that attracts more of the casual gamers as well. With games like Marvel vs Capcom and Mortal Kombat getting a significant skill gap rather quickly, this could be the game that people will enjoy playing without getting frustrated or caught in a substantially large combo.

You know, I'd be more excited if I was a long term Sony fan. I don't care much for Crash, Jack and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank. If it's good, I'll pick it up and play it.

Question is, will Ratchet and Clank/Jack and Daxter be separate characters or will they operate in the same fashion as Red in Brawl?

And since this is Sony, will characters like Nathan Drake be able to use guns? Will we see Snake?

As much as I like the idea and a good amount of the characters mentioned, I don't think they will be able to attain half of the success that Super Smash Bros. has.

I really can't believe of how obvious this is of a rip-off (or seems to be), but at the same time, I can't really blame them. Nintendo had a really good series on their hands, but they chose to not embrace decent online, DLC, or many other things that could have really helped the series. Now a different system (Wii-U) will help the series, but after the big flunk that was Brawl...too bad for Nintendo (though I doubt this series will ever top SSB in sales).

I'm usually one of the first few people to hop on the "No pictures, no opinion", but it's impossible for me to not be excited about this. I've always wanted something like this. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict as a first guess Cyber Raiden, Solid Snake, MAYBE Ryu, and to top it all off, Cole from InFAMOUS. I'd absolutely love to see Jak and Daxter get in though, they haven't had a good solid appearance in years.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think Sony's mascots are really all that iconic. Many of them never ended up going anywhere, and most of their good ones are relatively new in the grand span of things. Compared to Smash Bros or MvC this isn't really a big deal.

Also, Solid Snake is not a Sony mascot. It's presumptuous to assume he or any other MG characters will be in the game until we hear more.

Snake(Hell, even Big Boss) wouldn't be a mascot necessarily, but he still seems pretty iconic if you look at the collection of games PS3 has. Metal Gear Solid 4 still seems to be a prime game. I'm not trying to say "NO WRONG HE IS", just saying he still doesn't seem so far out(especially given the Micheal commercial we had recently).

Though I still wouldn't say color me surprised if some old icons from PS1 era came back, and I almost hope for a few. Cloud, albeit not being much of a fan of him, seems like a good idea to me.

Oh I wasn't implying he wasn't an icon (he is), I just don't necessarily consider him a mascot so i think even though MG has a decent Sony presence it's not really in the bag yet
