More of if you drew the images yourself (on computer or paper) then it's yours. If you credit Square-Enix for such a picture, it's fine.

It isn't a matter of you making the characters. It's more like if you took the sprites straight from whatever then it doesn't count. Only if you made everything yourself. Even if it's an official character from something. I'm pretty damn sure fanart is fine.

You honestly could just put a disclaimer saying "Characters belong to Nomura and Square-Enix, etc." or if there are Disney, say it belongs to them.

It really isn't that hard to understand. If you made the pictures yourself (fanart, essentially) and put them into a gif with other pictures (more fanart) then you can submit it.
