I see, thanks for clearing that up. Well, I like VLC better than Windows Media Player anyway, but to each their own, eh?

I haven't noticed any lag at all, I've been using it since last year.

Alright, so I downloaded Green Day's newest album, and for whatever reason, it won't play in anything. WMP gives an error saying it cannot read the extension (.mp3), and iTunes does nothing whenever I tell it to play, import, add file/folder. Fairly certain that Creative won't play it either. Why won't it play? The files are complete, too. There was a strange 'open before playing music' word doc that says:
Quote:
YOUR FILES ARE NOT BROKEN!!!

TO PLAY FILES YOU MUST CHANGE .mp3 TO .zip
THEN GET THE PASSWORD BY COMPLETING A FREE OFFER...SIMPLE!!!

1.) Go to this web address: (The free offer is County specific)

2.) Click the "Always Free, Click Here" Button.
- Follow the Install Instructions.
- Restart your web browser.

- The password is 13 letters long with no spaces in-between.

3.) Open Your Files With An Unzipping Tool.

4.) Enter Password & Play Your New File!

but I'm sure there's a way around this. It wants me to install (basically) adware, and I'm sure as hell not doing that.

Do you have the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack?

I have it and it plays all of the files I have for music, video etc.

Here is the download page for it
Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.7.5 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.

For this little tutorial, you'll need the following:
uTorrent (Found at: http://download.utorrent.com/1.6/utorrent.exe)

That client is used to handle .Torrent files, which you're going to download from here:
isoHunt - the BitTorrent and P2P search engine <-- That's my favorite site to get torrents from, it's in Canada too, which means that it's got a very small chance that it'll go down, but in case it does use this one:
Torrent Search :: Torrent Finder :: Torrent Search Engine It's not as organized, but it searches all the torrent sites it can find.

Alright, now we have to setup uTorrent with your router / Firewall!
Of course I'm not going to go through every single router and explain how to open a port, when someone else has already done it for me! See PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall on how to open ports in your router. I recommend a port between 6886-12000 - They seem to give me the least amount of trouble.

Alright, so now that you've got uTorrent up and running, when you're in uTorrents main window press "Ctrl+G" which should bring up the "Speed Guide" - If for whatever reason it doesn't, you can also access this menu through: Options -> Speed Guide..

Select your connection type (which you can find out at DSL · Cable · VOIP · Security · Satellite · Fiber · News · Tips · Reviews · Community · Tools - dslreports.com By running a speed test closest to you) and finally, enter the port # in the bottom box, and hopefully you're on your way!

Now, this doesn't mean that the ports are necessarily all open, you could have Windows Firewall (Laughable) enabled, or a different program that's blocking ports (ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, etc..) - To test this, after you've entered your port in the box, click the button next to it that says "Test to see if my port is opened correctly" - This will start a new internet session, and point you towards Torrent Port Checker - Where X is your port.
If for whatever reason your port is closed, post here and I'll do my best to help you get it open!

There are many features towards uTorrent, you can easily configure it - but if you'd like an indepth description of how to configure it, let me know. =)

Edit** I forgot to explain which torrents are good! On ISO Hunt.com after you perform a search you'll see a bunch of torrents, followed by a "S" and "L" on the title bar of the searches, those stand for "Seeders" and "Leechers" - A seeder is someone who's already downloaded the fill file, and is now letting the "Leechers" download the files from them. So essentially, you want to get a torrent with as many seeders, and as few leechers as possible!
This is sick! thanks so much for posting this i've been needing some help with this for awhile =)

This may just be the speed of my ISP

but doing a Direct Download using DownThemALL! as a firefox add-on, the highest speeds I've gotten is around 4.3 MB/s

(My university's webfilter may be to blame for this)
The highest speed I've gotten using uTorrent is about 1.2 MB/s and that had a LOT of seeders that I was connected to.

Would you guys think downloading an OS would be dangerous?
I figure microsoft would crack down on people who did it, so I'm a little concerned.
