Default fine tuning a pc game

Looking for a little advice regarding adjusting a game's graphics and video settings to run smoothly on a laptop. I've never really had to worry about doing this until know so I'm kinda lost. What should I look for in the system information to help determine what settings to choose? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most games will come with a 'recommended' setting preset to meet your computer's specs. However, you can turn the graphics down inside of the actual game's option/main menu.
