Rep Power: 5 ![]() Level: 22 EXP: | I seem to be having a problem with my internet. It all started when the cable got knocked out temporarily. Then the internet wouldn't work and whilst trying to fix it, I noticed that it worked if my router is unplugged. Can anyone help me fix this? To where the internet works while my router is connected. |

So I just wanted to get this straight - Your internet has not been working since your net was knocked out first. However it only doesn't work when your router is the one that is distributing the connection to the internet. When you unplug the router though, your internet works fine ( and I'm guessing that is just with the modem). Is that right so far? | |

| EVIL NETWORK OVERLORD | Are you able to access the router's built in webserver, or atleast get icmp (ping) replies? Just connect the router to the computer (with or without internet). Go to start. Cick on 'Run' for XP or the 'Search programs and files' option for Vista/Win7. Type 'cmd' to start a command session. After your console window is open, type 'ipconfig' to get your ip configurations. Then take note of your current gateway. Type 'ping (gateway)', where (gateway) is the ip address from the previous steps listed for your gateway. If you get a reply, chances are that the router is good. And you probably have a bad cable or a wire short. (I would suggest testing a different router on your connection, if you have a friend that will lend you one for a few hours.) If you don't get a reply from the router, then your router may be boned. In that case, it'd be time to look for a new router. ~~Azu |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() Level: 32 EXP: | Okay, the problem is most likely that your router isn't getting an IP address. So first thing you'll need is for an IP to be forwarded to the router so that the router can also provide subs for other devices that you need connected to the net. What you'll want to try first is probably unplug the cable connecting the modem and the router. Make sure your router's power supply is also disconnected. Then reconnect the cord from the modem to the router. Plug the power supply for the router back in and wait a few mins and try see if it works again. What I should probably ask is this - What type of router is it that you have? Brand/type/ etc. |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() Level: 22 EXP: | After I finish deciphering that I'll try that, thank you. To Forever; I've tried the rebooting thing. I have a Linksly or whatever it's called. |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() Level: 32 EXP: | What you can also try is to access the device straight from your web browser. Depending on the type of router, you'll either want to type this into your browsers address bar - 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 That will usually give you access to your gateway device (be it your router or modem you have connected). Then from there you can run some diagnostics to see what the problem may be further. It helps to know what type of router it is though so that I could walk you through it better. |
