Rep Power: 1 ![]() | Alright so I have one established on my home computer but i'm wanting to switch the connection to my laptop to download something quickly. I don't want to use a network router so I can use the connection, but I just want to switch it for a few minutes. What do I need to do? Switch the ethernet cable, power cable, or DSL cable? Or is there something else I must do? |

| We're making us a baby | Unplug the cables and set it up on your laptop the same way it was set up on your PC. Or alternatively you can download the file put it on a Flash Drive and then copy it to your Laptop. |

| Warrior of Darkness | Assuming you've got your DSL modem plugged into your desktop via an ethernet cable, simply unplug the ethernet cable from the desktop and plug it into your laptop. |

Rep Power: 1 ![]() | Yeah I got what your saying. But on the ethernet cable, it's too large to fit in to my laptop entrance, so I guess it won't work without getting a new cord? |

| Their Will Be Only Chaos!! | That does not sound right. Your laptop does not have a Cat5 jack? How old is your laptop? What Petie said, should have worked. |

| Warrior of Darkness | If it doesn't fit, it's because you're trying to plug it into your laptop's modem (which takes a standard phone cable, not an ethernet cable). If you do not have an ethernet jack on your laptop (which means you probably have a relatively old laptop), you'll need to either buy an adapter for ethernet, set up a wireless network (and buy a wireless adapter if your laptop doesn't have built-in wireless, which it likely doesn't if you don't have ethernet), or simply download whatever it is you need to something like an external hard drive and copy it to the laptop from there. If your laptop is fairly new though, I'd look for another port that the ethernet cable fits in though. A new cord won't help you because the only cord that will fit into the port you're currently trying to use is a phone line which you cannot connect to your DSL modem for this purpose (you have a phone like already connected to the modem but it's not the line connecting the modem to your computer). |

Rep Power: 1 ![]() | Yeah it appears that it doesn't have an ethernet jack. Thanks though, I know how to set it up from there. I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy anything. |

| Warrior of Darkness | You still technically don't if the file(s) you're downloading aren't too large and you or someone you know has a flash drive/external hard drive you could use for this purpose. I'd definitely recommend trying this route before you go and spend a bunch of money you don't need to spend (unless, of course, you're going to need to be able to get online from the laptop more often than this one time). |
