X was great and XII also, X had the story while XII had the gameplay... Wait no, X had both the Story and the gameplay, XII had challenge. Anyway from the ones I've played:

Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics

Play XII first, trust me, if you play the other ones first you'll be dissapointed by the story of XII, then play X and the rest leaving VII for last because it's so damn over rated, it's a good game but it isn't the best Final Fantasy, not to mention I want the FF7 Compilation to die.

My personal favorites, which I therefore recommend to you, are FFIV, FFVI, FFI, and FFTA. I haven't play FFT yet, but, you know, I've only heard great things about it.

FFIII (Difficult and Fun)
FFVI ( Great gameplay and plot)
FFVIII ( Easy game but fun to play)
FFIX( A classic)
FFX( The plot is Emotional, stunning graphics for a 2001 game and has such wonderful gameplay.)
FFXII( Has great graphics great gameplay and a deep plot)

I lol'd at FFX having a good storyline. XII had a better storyline AND gameplay than X.

Of course gameplay is disputable (some may think watching their characters do all the work is "boring.")

Cursed is right, Vann wasn't really the main character of XII anyway, Final Fantasy X had good plot twists, but again Final Fantasy XII is harder.

It may not have been the best Final Fantasy but it wasn't the worst, there are far more worser Final Fantasies than this, X-2 for example was the worst IMO.

Having a convoluted story about a dead civilization's dream mixed in with puppy love does not count as a deep or good plot.

Although FFXII's plot wasn't as character-driven as FFX's, I think the world of Ivalice and how it weaves it's own story is far greater than that of Spira's.
