Rep Power: 10 ![]() ![]() | ...Alright. After typing and typing and typing SO much, I'm done! ...Sorta. D: Anyways, this forum is in INDEFINITE need of a roleplaying guide, ever since LoC's guide ran away. So, I'm going to attempt to make one of my own. I wanted a reference on what I should put down in this guide but, I don't exactly have that so... this might be a tad bit mediocre. -bows- Gomensaiiiii~ .__.;; But, I'm still putting this up. Hopefully it's good! Table of Contents o1. Introduction o2. Roleplaying Definitions [REMEMBER THESE] + Grammar Importance o3. Anatomy of a Roleplay i. Plotline 1. Explanation on Detail ii. Characters 1. Mary-Sues/Gary-stus 2. Godmoding 3. Character Templates iii. Plot Twists AKA Posts 1. Essentials o4. Anatomy of the Introduction Post [IN PROGRESS] o5. Final Advice [IN PROGRESS] o1. Introduction If you're strolling around this forum, chatting even, you've probably heard of roleplaying. It's where you take a character and act them out, in literacy form. It's actually kind of like acting! Except, you don't have to remember your lines... When I say character, what do I mean exactly? ANY character. Sora, Donald, Goofy, your own, ANYONE! Roleplaying is about stretching your imagination and doing everything you can with it. If you've got a box over your head, then you can't roleplay. Take off the box, and just start thinking. Who do you want to be? If you want to be someone, there's something you gotta know first. Literacy. It's writing, of course. If you don't know how to write, then you can't use literacy. Grammar is essential and so is creativity. Without it, you are NOTHING in the roleplaying world. But, it's so vast that there's so much going around, you don't know which way you want to go. That's why you need originality. Don't expect your roleplay to kick off the ground with one shot. It doesn't work that way! You have to work and work and work to get your storyline to work and attract. What're the essentials of roleplaying, though? -Grammar -A good idea of roleplaying -Originality -Creativity In this class, we'll be working on the basics of roleplaying, not grammar and not originality. First things first... Definitions. o2. Roleplaying Definitions + Grammar Importance Roleplaying - Playing a character in reality or in writing. God-moding - Turning a character so invincible that they can kill everything with one shot or can take no hits. Powerplaying - Taking control of another character, even if its for a moment. [This could be in fights, just doing actions, ANYTHING.] Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu - A guy [Gary-Stu] or girl [Mary-Sue] character that is popular, has special gifts, anything that is basically what you want where there are no flaws. Canon Character - A character that is from a video game, movie, TV show, anything. [These are sometimes called "original" characters.] Original Character - A character that you created. [These are sometimes called "madeup" characters.] Literacy - Using correct punctuation, spelling, grammar, and the like. Literate - Someone who uses correct punctuation, spelling, grammar, etc. RP - Roleplay RPing - Roleplaying RPer - Roleplayer OOC - Out of character [You can put "OOC:" or use "()", "[]", "{}", etc.] IC - In character [You can put "IC:" or close your OOC bits with the symbols above.] So, there's a lot of definitions. No big deal! That's just the start and, you can sigh because... you don't need flash cards for this one. These will gradually get stuck in your head over time. Oh! And there's something important you need to know: Roleplaying takes a LOT of practice. When I started out, it was just in a Digimon roleplay. I had no clue what I was doing, I just wanted to try it out. And that was a VERY fateful day when I did. My grammar sucked, and so did everything else but, that was just the beginning steps. But, if you want to roleplay, you MUST have a good grasp on grammar and creativity. I cannot stress this ENOUGH. You need to have good grammar and you need to get that box off your head so those ideas can flow!! If you have troubles with grammar, go to your library and check out a book on grammar. If you're not an A+ student in grammar now, you will be when you're about one or two years into roleplaying. Still, there are roleplayers who have been roleplaying for about a year or even two and still don't have the idea that you NEED good grammar to survive in this world. If that grammar book doesn't help, thelonepickle's "Articles of Literacy" in the Fanfiction section will help you out. It has every topic under the sun, in a whole thread. Also, it has a step-by-step guide to getting off asterisks, a very handy guide. [DASHES PWN ASTERISKS ANYDAY.] Now, that I've stressed that you need good grammar to roleplay, banged my head on the wall a few times, and chugged down some soda to "calm" me now, I can continue. Next up, what is the anatomy of a roleplay? o3. Anatomy of a Roleplay If you want to survive in the art, you NEED to know anatomy. Grammar is to roleplaying as anatomy is to drawing! But, that's not important here. What's important is the anatomy of a roleplay, not the anatomy of a person. Here, take a look: -Plotline -Characters -Plot Twists -Literacy i. Plotline First, plotline. Why plotline? BECAUSE, it's the spine of a roleplay. Well, actually the brain. It holds it all together, and creates the twists and turns that are around every corner. Take Kingdom Hearts for example. It's basically "traveling worlds and sealing keyholes", right? That's what creates the plot twists! You travel to worlds but, you learn things that make your jaw drop along the way. You seal keyholes but, there are people who are trying to stop you at all costs! Doesn't that sound like fun? Of course it does! It's Kingdom Hearts, after all! ...Back to the point. If you want to create an epic adventure, you need to have a good storyline. What's an example of a good storyline and how about the bad kind? Bad: ...Nothing, at all. You tell what kind of roleplay it is, just saying its a KH roleplay, and you start it off. THAT MAKES ME WANT TO TAKE RIKU'S KEYBLADE AND STAB MYSELF REPEATEDLY WITH IT. -fumes- Good: [Taken from my LJ roleplay] "Some events trigger into other things. That's definitely the case in Sora's first trip to Hollow Bastion. A stab through the heart to release his own and his friend's, Kairi, hearts not only turned Sora into a heartless for a bit of time, but it created two Nobodies: Roxas and Naminé. Too bad no one knew that it created one other... And, little did anyone know that something triggered the Organization to come back. Not just any Organization: a new one called Neo Organization XIII, or the Forgotten. It started when one journey ended and another began. "Sora! Riku!" the red haired girl exclaimed, running as quickly as she could to greet her two friends. "Hey, what's up?" Sora questioned just as Kairi stopped in front of the two boys. "Look." That bottle in Kairi's hand changed everything, because it all was a lie. Sora had snuck out of Destiny Islands that night, going to catch the train that took him to Twilight Town. There, he was greeted by someone in a normal, everyday Organization cloak, his element being steel. Suddenly, the voice that had been in Sora's thoughts ever since The World that Never Was just disappeared out of nowhere! Roxas just disappeared out of nowhere from Sora, taking something of the keyblade wielder's in the process. For the past two years, Sora has been missing with King Mickey and Riku trying to find him and Roxas just appeared out of nowhere, being found by a voice that belonged to Naminé. Now, Kairi's left alone on their home island once again, seeming a little bit more determined to find her two friends that before. But, all of that's the least important right now, it seems. The Organization's back and, they still have one goal, being the same exact one as before, just with a little different way of doing it. And, when Sora's not around, it looks like another keyblader's going to have to take his place... One thing never seems to change: not everything you believe is actually the truth." What's the difference? One has detail, it's long, and it brings a much needed grin to my face. The other? IT HAS NOTHING. It makes me want to SCREAM. When creating a roleplay, you need to get everything you want to happen or has already happened to be put down. It doesn't matter if it's a KH2 roleplay that roleplays out what happened in KH2. YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN IT. Put in your own words what's happened over the year. Kairi's been left on the islands, Roxas has showed up in Twilight Town, Sora's fast asleep, and Riku's... nowhere. You can add detail and make it two paragraphs long and, voila! You have... a good storyline. Here. Have a cookie. Now, I've been screaming about it for a bit now. And, you're probably asking "YOU'RE INSANE." ...Wait, that's not what you're asking. D: I HOPE that's not what you're asking. This is what you SHOULD be asking, "WHAT THE CRAP IS DETAIL." E-a-s-y. 1. Explanation on Detail It's adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, verbs, nouns, YOUR FRIENDS. LOVE THEM. HUG THEM. PET THEM. BECAUSE THEY LOVE YOU TOO. ...Aw. By detail, I actually mean what fleshes out a sentence. In a sentences, there's only a subject and predicate. Subjects have nouns, and predicates have verbs. Look at this: "Riku ran." Subject. Predicate. But, that's the most boring sentence I've ever made so, I'm gonna flesh it out a bit more. "The silver haired boy named Riku ran across the beach in a race against his best friend." See? MUCH better. Now, let's step up and see what we can REALLY create. "Thud. Bump. Thud. Bump. With a horrified expression plastered onto her pale face, Rena placed her hand over her chest, her fingers pointed into her t-shirt. Those deep blue eyes had grown so wide, so terrified. That pounding was running away..." And, THAT is much better than that simple Riku sentence. No, not the first one. The second one. It's still too simple. So, can you see what grammar can do? It really is your best friend. .__. Yush, it's more a best friend than your bestbestbestbestBEST friend. BECAUSE IT LOVES YOU. GIVE IT LOVE IN RETURN! -emo violin- ...Alright, back onto the topic of roleplaying. We'll continue on with the anatomy of a roleplay... ii. Characters Next up is characters, of course. Why are characters so important? ...That's a very stupid question. If the storyline is the brain, then the characters must be the heart and soul. They're REALLY what a roleplay is all about. They create the plot twists, and they move the real storyline forwards. Without characters, roleplays, fanfiction, video games, movies, TV shows would be NOTHING. If Sora, Riku, Kairi, and every other character under the sun weren't in KH, then... there wouldn't be a KH! That's why there's a character designer: to design characters to go into this plot that needs some company. BUT, there are some things you should know before making a character. One is... the worst: mary-sue or gary-stu. 1. Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu As I said before, they're those characters that are popular, flawless, have a secret secret secret special power that will stop the world from chaos whenever they want it to happen, or anything else like that. You have to BALANCE out your character! But, there's still a million mary-sues and gary-stus in the world. Which is why I've made it my mission to destroy them both! D:< ...Wait. That's killing illiteracy... Heh. ^^; ANYWAYS~ If you're working on a character for a roleplay and you don't want to make them a mary-sue or gary-stu, take a look for the following: -Is an important character in love with them, from what you say in their bio? -Are they the most popular kid in their world? -Are they skinny and flawlessly pretty or insanely muscular? -Are they extremely weak yet hold a power to rebuild a lost universe or civilization? -Do they have an important weapon that's in the roleplay? -Are they not clumsy, naive, or stupid, meaning they're incredibly smart? If any of those describe your character, though the weapon one isn't as strict to this concept, then you have a HUGE problem. Take a look at those details and fix them, or else you'll regret it completely. I've made up a mary-sue-ish character before, if not a few times. But, I've realized my mistakes and fixed them. Let's take a look at the difference between two characters that I made, one being mary-sue-ish and one being more like a real person. Takushi Rena: -Is a 13 year old who looks about... 13 years old. -Was in love with Sora and was the replacement of Kairi in a roleplay. -Had a keyblade, a thunder based one, that had no way to seal keyholes yet, did anyways. -Had Riku hate her for one reason or another. -Came from reality and ended up on Destiny Islands with no memory of reality, just life on Destiny Islands. Rena: -Is a 13 year old who looks about 10 years old because she's so short. -Is clumsy, naive, and tends to get into lots of trouble. That, and she's not the brightest person you can meet. -Has a keyblade that's actually an inverted version of the Kingdom Key, with lies going around that's she's taking Sora's place while he's not around. -Doesn't even know Sora yet, like Roxas, has memories that belong to Sora. -Came from a place called Cucio Bay, with no memory of what she was born and what not. -In my fanfiction, Rena tends to hide behind Roxas and call him "nii-san" or big brother. See? Takushi Rena is basically Kairi's replacement and came from reality with a blink of an eye, along to appear on Destiny Islands as Sora's best friend. Rena, on the other hand, is probably the most curious keyblader you will ever have the chance to meet. Takushi Rena is immediately in love with Sora while Rena doesn't even trust Roxas at first, though she ends up calling him nii-san and hiding behind him whenever some boss shows up. There's a BIG difference there. But, I gotta clear something up. What's the most clique thing you can add onto about characters? Lost memories. Takushi Rena has the most mary-sue-ish way to lose memories yet, Rena lost some because she's not actually a "person" with a heart. Takushi Rena has a heart, Rena doesn't exactly. Which explains why she doesn't really have any memories. What I'm saying is don't turn the clique thing of lost memories and make it too clique. And, don't make it mary-sue or gary-stu ish. Now that I've quit ranting about mary-sues and gary-stus, I can continue on with more stuff. 2. Godmoding What else can you do to make your character icky when you create it? Godmoding. Godmoding is something you can add on in your template and during a roleplay. There are only two things you can really do that are the B-A-D things in a template. This is the second. Godmoding is when you make your character invincible and other characters can't defeat you. You can also do this with powerplaying but, we won't go into that right now. Let's take Hercules, for example. He's the son of a god but, he's not a godmoder... Which would be nuts if he were. Why would that be nuts? Because, he's weak as well. I haven't seen the movie in a LONG while but, I know that when Pain and Panic brought him down to Earth, they made him drinking that weird bottle of stuff which made him stop glowing. When that happened, he was a human, who was a bit too strong and somewhat of a klutz. When you godmode, your character isn't going to be a klutz. They're going to be super strong, have a million abilities that NO ONE knows about, and can probably destroy a planet with the wave of their hand. Either way, it's still godmoding which is BAD. So, how do you get off godmoding, or how do you fix it? EASY. Take your character and add some weaknesses to them. For example, let's say that you have a character that's super super strong, but it definitely needs a weakness. Pick ANYTHING. You could even say water as a weakness! ...So, we'll pick water. This character has a weakness of water. Why water? Do they melt when it hits their skin? What event caused that? Explain it all in your bio. Now, let's say that water is their weakness and, whenever they get hit by water, something happens. We'll say they melt. Water planets? BAD idea for them. They melt in two seconds flat! Same with rain. It's like acid to their skin. No cloak can save them from the rain. See? A weakness! But, the other characters probably won't know about that, so there might be clues throughout the roleplay about that weakness. Still, you need to tone down that strength of their's. If there are ANY abilities that can be used to destroy a planet, get rid of them NOW. I'm talking about the ones that they point their finger at a planet and *BOOM!* it's gone. if you have any abilities where they can throw spheres, the sun, other planets, or create energy to destroy a planet in one shot, GET. RID. OF. IT. If there's any other abilities that go along the lines of that that you're curious about getting rid of them or not, ask me or anyone else about it. We're here to make you a better roleplayer so, ask questions at anytime you need to know something. Now, let's tone down that strength of their's. ...No, you don't have to get rid of the muscles. Just, tone it down a big. Instead of them having uber huge muscles, make them a little less strong with the muscles. Now, you need to assign some elements to them. If they're weak against water, fire would be a GOOD element. Fire to burn things and everything else. They don't get along well with people who use water and, they're very... "on fire", like Axel sorta. They have a fiery personality and they can snap and start burning like fire can. What about energy? That would be a good element too... Just, don't go overboard with the elements. Two is PLENTY. So, they have fire and energy abilities! Think up of what they can do with those abilities and what attacks they could have. Just don't add any attacks that could destroy a planet... So, they're weak against water and strong with fire and energy. Let's add another weaknesses to balance it out: ice. Ice = water. The details are what I've already said so, I won't go into it. Hopefully, you fixed the kinks in your character's template that revolve around godmoding and mary-sues/gary-stus. Getting rid of both of these in your character's profile will definitely help make a roleplay fun. 3. Character Templates But, where do you seriously go from there? I've said it over and over again: template. "Whatzatemplate?" It's the information on your character! It holds what they look like, information on their weapon, their biography, and other things as well. And, I'm going to go and explain all of these spots. Name: Age: Weapon: Gender: Side: Heart: Appearance: Personality: Bio: This is what my normal template looks like. Your's don't have to look exactly the same, nor does it have to stick to that stuff. But, this is what I preferably use so, I'm going to use this one as an example in this. Name: Easy. You know your name, right? You put their name in this slot, of course! So, if their name is, let's say, Zero Everwood. You'd put that name in this slot. You can, only if you want to or know it, put an explanation of what their name means. For Rena, I sometimes might put that it means part of the French word for "fox" next to her name in brackets. But, an explanation on their name is NOT necessary. Age: Their age, of course! Normal characters, or the ones I know at least, have their age around 12 - 20, or maybe even higher. Sometimes it can even be 83,000 or more... which is nuts. Just put a number here. If they're REALLY old, like past a normal person's age, then... explain why. If they're 2,000 years old, explain WHY. Weapon: In this slot, you put what their weapon is. It can be an ability they have, or it can be an actual sword. You can even put a description on what the blade, or whatever it is going to be, if you want! Gender: Guy or girl. E-A-S-Y. Side: Good, bad, or neutral. If they're more of hero, put good; if they want to take over the universe, put evil; if they don't know what side they're on or they're in the middle, put neutral. Heart: When I put this in a roleplay, I usually put that you can choose from "light", "dark", or "twilight". Or, you could put "no heart"... sometimes. Now, before I go on, I have to say one thing: DO NOT NEGLECT THE APPEARANCE, PERSONALITY, AND BIO SLOTS. These are the descriptive portions of the template and, you have to pay attention to them, a lot of attention. Appearance: This explains what your character looks like. If you don't have a picture, you'll need a description. ...No. Don't go off looking for pictures; use your mind to imagine what they'll look like! Besides, appearances with images only are NOT allowed in this forum. You need to describe, which is why I enforced that to the bios. Use adjectives, adverbs, and any type of word under the sun. That's what makes up detail, ya know. Personality: I hate nothing more than a personality with three words. NO. IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. When I say personality, that means description. And, it's the part where you'll need a thesaurus handy. Words like quirky, angry, mischievous, happy-go-lucky, and others should be found here. Describe when they act like that, what they act like when they meet new people, etc. Bio: Now, for the biggest part of them all, the biography. This explains their past, present, and possibly future. It describes why that have that weapon, why they have that ability, and what's happened to their past life, if there are any changes. Do NOT say that are mysterious. You can make them mysterious in the roleplay, just not in the biography. Don't be clique and don't make them mysterious. That's just an excuse for "I can't think of anything". OF COURSE YOU CAN THINK OF SOMETHING! Just brainstorm! Start with something small and link it outwards. Attach on things that the certain idea have in common. Other Things for Your Template: Theme Song Abilities Home World Current Location [If you have anymore, PLEASE let me know.] And, with that put together, you can make a template like this: Name: Takushi Rena Age: 13 Gender: Female Heart: Twilight Side: Light Weapon: Platinum Heart keyblade; A basic looking keyblade that looks almost identical to the Kingdom Key. The blade is silver and the frame is blue, while a crown shaped chain hangs from the end of the weapon. Its sometimes called the "Key of Nobody", from what she can tell from hearing Nobodies talk, and it has the power to lock and unlock keyholes but seems to have serious consequences if it locks anything. It can talk in Rena's mind sometimes, acting as if its toying with her and trying to get her to take on tasks. What is this thing anyways? Personality: Even though she's simple-minded at times, Rena has a strong sense of justice yet she'll do anything for her friends or anyone she cares about, even if it means joining the wrong side. She's stubborn and when she pouts, she acts like a little kid. She can get angry easily, though, but normally keeps a smile on her face and tries to get everyone else to do the same. The tomboy is naive and curious, taking off running as soon as a thought pops into her mind which lands her into loads of trouble. Appearance: Renawears a navy blue vest with a black hood and armor on her shoulders. White, navy blue tipped t-shirt sleeves connect with her vest and a sleeveless white shirt is worn underneath her vest. She wears a pair of black, fingerless gloves (Which look like Sora's KH1 gloves) and a royal blue belt hangs loosely around her waist. A chain connects to her baggy blue jeans and a pair of black, oversized tennis rest on her feet. The tomboy has messy brown hair with bangs that fall over her eyes so, most of the time, only one eye is visible. Her eyes are deep blue while her skin is somewhat pale. She's also kind of short, almost like a kid, so she has to look up at everyone. Bio: Most things known to Rena are basically just mysteries and when she asks questions, she never gets a straight answer. Rena is known as number zero to a few Organization members, for an enigmatic reason. Only they know why, and they aren't telling anything anytime soon. And there are hundreds of memories that she watches in her mind, no sure which ones are real and fake. A few of them make her curious, though. A set of memories where she wears clothes that looked like they were a boy's clothes, along with giant yellow shoes, and a pair of black cloaked figures who she considered friends or maybe even family. The tomboy's lived on Cucio Bay for as long as she could remember, waking up on the once sunny shores of the bayside town. But, it was only after her arrival that a strange thing happened: The town was literally turned into a grey, pale, empty city after kids played a deadly game of hide-and-seek. Though it was grainy, she remembered fire yet sometimes she remembered just plain darkness, shadows crawling out of the ground and hunting for prey. The only light was from the little balls of light that floated up towards the black sky and disappeared. That was the last and only day that the town was normal. The next day, there was just grey; the sand was grey, the buildings were grey, the sky was grey, and the sea was grey. The only people that remained were people who went and hid from the shadows except for Rena. She saw the whole nightmare and almost lost her heart because of it. The only thing she cried as her hands were pulled tightly over her head was, "I'm sorry... I don't have it... I promise..." That seemed like a distant dream now, when it was only three years ago. Rena survived around the town, snatching food and sleeping on the rooftops which she called home. She had no clue how to fight but she wielded a old metal pipe just in case she had to knock someone over the head. The night before the final attack on the town, a weird trial played in her sleep and she fought with a sword against shadows and sleek, silver creatures baring familiar symbols on their heads. Static-y memories played in her mind as well: ones with a boy and a girl on their island home. After every dream, a voice would ask 'Do you remember?' What she was supposed to remember, she could careless because there were too many weird things happening at the time. There was another attack by the shadows on Cucio Bay, where Rena gained a mysterious key shaped weapon and disappeared from her home. Though she hated the place, she misses it a lot. She'll do anything to get it back but first, she just has to find out where she is along with who "Sora" is. See? When you add description and detail, you get EXACTLY what you want in your bio. iv. Plot Twists AKA Posts Posts are what really make up a roleplay. They create the plot twists, they bring your character to life, and they're what makes roleplaying fun! [But what could be more fun than writing a template? -exit sarcasm, stage left-] One thing that I love about roleplaying is when some incredible plot twist shows up and disrupts the whole course of the story. That's always what has me glued to the screen and reading it over and over again, feeling my heart pound as scan the lines. This might not happen to you but, this is what happens in roleplays, or should anyways. Your adrenaline gets pumping and, that adrenaline shifts into your character. You begin to see the world, at that moment, from their eyes and you can put yourself there to figure out their action. Now, that I'm out of my weird... thing... mode, I'm going to go into some details about posts. i. Essentials At the beginning of a roleplay, there isn't any action clearly present. That's because, we're setting up the story. It happens in battles as well so, don't think that the roleplay is going to take off. Do NOT immediately add a huge battle at the beginning. I specify it only as HUGE because, that changes the course of the roleplay WAY too early. A little fight against some enemies is fine. If you want to add a plot twist to the roleplay, try not to make it abrupt. You can make a character show up, have another character interact with them, and then something can happen. But, that's just an example. Take it slow and steady. Also, at the beginning, don't have your character interacting with every single character under the sun. It gets annoying after a while. You guys'll probably all be on the same team at once, and you'll know your enemies, too! |

Rep Power: 10 ![]() ![]() | It's not really a roleplaying term, though. o.o; It's more of a forum term. :D; It's basically putting other down. D: Thank yew for the comments, everyone~ :3; I'm working on the missing parts, and, hopefully, they'll be up soon! *___*; |

| Organization Member | I'm impressed. It's been such a long time since I last visited the forum and I must say, you've done a great job with being helpful to others. >3 I remember when I first roleplayed with you, though it was when you had your very first name.. which I have a hard time remembering. XD Anyways, I read the entire thing and see no flaws. Great job! |
