...the King said to find the Key...
The Keyblade. A weapon of such power that it is capable of locking away entire worlds, or of tearing them open, vunerable to those without hearts.
The Heartless. The manifestation of the darkness inside a heart? Some think so. All that of known of these mysterious creatures is that they savagly persue heart energy and consume it to reproduce, to create more of their species. They consume the hearts of worlds, eat the world from the inside out, and in time, nothing remains. Well, not much remains. Some theorise that the place in which the Keyblade Master Sora battled Xenohart, under the guise of Ansem, was a heartless 'nest' of sorts, a place where they gathered all the pieces of worlds they had consumed and used them to create their own world.
And then there are the Nobodies: That which remains after a Heartless is borne, a body without a heart or soul. The ascended forms of these Nobodies led an army to absord Kingdom Hearts, creating their own heart energy and becoming complete beings.
But what of the third component, the soul? Where does the soul go when the heart and the body seperate?
The answer is simple. The soul becomes an instrument. A Key. A Keyblade.
Sora's Keyblade was forged from his own soul, which was strong enough to endure such a process without being destroyed, and Kairi's soul became a Keyblade when she entrusted her Heart to Sora. Riku's original Keyblade was formed from the six souls of the six princesses of Heart, and his second, Way to the Dawn, was forged from his own soul after it was strengthened by endureing darkness. The same, however, is not true of King Mickey, for his keyblade was not formed of his own soul. King Mickey's keyblade was formed from the soul of Xenohart, after he gave himself to the darkness.
But the creation of so many Heartless, so many Nobodies, in the battle of the Cloaks and Keys, unleashed a myriad of souls, which all gathered to one place.
A spiritual nexus, the Crossroad was found by both Sora and Riku, though at differing times, and acted as a gateway between worlds for them. For Sora, it was the gateway to Castle Oblivion, the world of memories, and for Riku, it was the gateway from that world. Though, at the time, neither of them realised it's importance.
The Crossroad is the centre of the universe, and the location of the Heart of all worlds...Kingdom Hearts.
Now years have passed. Sora, Kairi and Riku are searching for the Door to the Light, unaware of the siginificance of the Crossroads, or their weapons. Meanwhile, Castle Disney slips slowly into darkness under the effect of Xenohart's Soul, King Mickey's Keyblade. Keyblades abound, the souls of the fallen, and a special eleven souls remain to be found...the souls of the 13th Order, minus Xenohart's and Roxas' souls. Roxas' soul has joined at last with Sora's, and with two souls, the Keyblade Master has gained the ability to weild two Keyblades as his own. A soul may choose, for a time, to follow a master, but with few exceptions, that master will never truly 'own' the Keyblade.
Keychains, the forms of a keyblade, are that Keyblade's memories. As Sora gained memories of different worlds, so did his soul gain different forms, and the same is true of Kairi and Riku. Many Keyblades, however, come with a set of forms, that particular soul's memories, and no new ones can be created.
These abounding souls infect all worlds in the universe, creating hundreds, thousands of Keybladers...of light, and of darkness.
The Keyblade War begins.
