Default AMV 101 for Dummies!!! (a noob tutorial)

So you wanna make AMV's? here's a noob guide. This is for winows movie maker, and i will teach you the various vocabularies and actions in WMM. if you don't already have it, get it at www.download.com . Now you need clips...

Kh clips: www.kh-vids.net
naruto clips: http://naruto.awardspace.com/
anime clips in general (including naruto): http://www.realitylapse.com/
Dragonball Z: http://www.dbsilver.com/index.php?x=media/episodes

ok now that you have your clips, import them. open up windows movie maker and click File>import into collections. Find your video and click open, it is now imported into your collections. You can now drag clips of the video to your timeline/storyboard editor.

Now you need a song, i won't tell you how to get them but try iTunes.

Import the song the same way you import videos, file>import into collections and drag it into your timeline.

This part was explained by Gamergirl89, as i didn't have the patience to type this out xD:

1. copy the song(s) u wanna use from the cd on to ur computer and save them in ur music folder if u have it or just make a folder to put all ur songs

2. in movie maker click "file" and then click "import". then go to ur music folder, pick the song u want and click "open" Now the song should appear in your "collections" folder in movie maker.

3. Noe go to "collections" and drag the song into the area that says "Audio/Music" and there ya go!

****o and make sure u have the "timeline" appearing when ur doing this. it won't work if u have the storyboard showing
__________________

Clips: Clips are clips. They are different sections and parts of your video. Drag them onto the timeline to edit and position.

Timeline: it is the long bar at the bottom. It lets you put your clips in different orders and trim them to different lengths. this will become very useful
timeline:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...9/timeline.jpg

Storyboard: It does the same as the timeline, except you can't trim clips. Which is why i don't use it much, to switch from storyboard to timeline, just click the little button that says "show storyboard" or "show timeline".
Storyboard:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6919/storyboard3vl.jpg

Trimming: Trimming does just as it says. It lets you cut and edit the clips to make them shorter or longer. Grab the edges of the clips and drag to make it longer or shorter. When you make AMV's, you wanna drag the ends to when the beat of the song begins, so that the clips transition on beat. It's quite self-explanitory.

The Time Measure: I'm not sure what the real name is, but that's what i like to call it. As you play your project, this thing will move along the project marking where you are in your project. When you click pause it will stop, and you can trim your clip to the point where the measure is. This is key in amv's, as you need to pause it when the beat begins, so that you can drag the clip to the measure, and have the video clips transition on beat. remember to have the clips switch on beat, not on word following.
Time Measure:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...imemeasure.jpg

Fading: This is to make clips fade into eachother, rather than ending abruptly. To make them slowly fade into eachother, grab the edges of the clip and drag them into one-another. it will make them fuse together and fade. you can always undo this.
Fading:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...n29/fading.jpg

Audio Levels: Do you want to make the song louder than your clip? or maker your clips quieter than your songs? to mess with the audio levels, click on the icon in your timeline that looks like an arrow. a new window will pop-up. drag the measure to the left on the "audio from video" side to make the clips audio more audible. drag the measure to the right on the "audio/music" side to make your song louder, and the clips quieter. For AMV's, you wanna drag this all the way to the right to mute the clips and only allow your song to be heard. You can also mute the clips individually, but that takes longer and i will explain it next.
Audio Levels:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...udiolevels.jpg

Muting: If you want to just mute the clips individually, scroll down the timeline and click on the audio bar.
Audio bar = the sound that your clips produce
audio/music bar = the song that you added to the clips.
click on the audio bar under your clips and right-click>mute. it will mute the clips
Muting:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...n29/muting.jpg

Effects: You want to add video effects? ok right click the clip and click video effects. You can now add and remove effects. Fade in from white/black lets your clip fade in from the color white/black. Fade out to white/black, lets your clip slowly end by fading into darkness or light. Slow-down slows down your clips, and so on and so forth. Experiment with effects, and you will learn to love them.
Effects:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...29/effects.jpg

Text/Titles: You want to add text, or credits at the end of your AMV? Go to tools> titles and credits...
Choose when you want the text to appear, whether you want it to be ON a clip, or after the selected clip you have at the moment, or whatever
the next screen allows you to type in what you want the text to say. click "change the title animation" to change how it will show up, such as a subtitle, as credits, or newspaper style, or fading in or however. Click "change the text font and color" to change the size, color, and font of your text, and change the color of your background (if you didn't choose for it to be on a selected clip) you can also change the position. When you're done, click "done add title to movie" to add it to your project. It is handled just like a clip, you can trim the edges to make it appear longer or shorter, and fade it in. it works just like a video/audio clip.
Text/Titles:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2...texttitles.jpg

To Save your project for later:, go to file>save project as
To Save your project as a movie file to upload to Youtube or filefront or antyhing else: Go to file>save movie file, you can choose where to save it, and what size to save it as (the smaller size, the lower the quality, but the faster it takes to upload to a website).

use all of these techniques together, and you can make a really good AMV!! remember to keep it on beat. I hope this noob tutorial helped you, and i hope to see future AMV's from you!! =)

^ yeah thanks, i just don't want to tell them how to do it, because you can get them illegaly, and i can't explain that cuz it's against the rules. of course, you can rip them off of CD's, or download. that's how you get songs ^.^

PS: i added what you said to my tut, is that ok? xD

you can't download clips, you get the movie, or rip the movie off of the dvd on your computer and cut up the movie into clips.

yes that can happen, it's a natural lag from clips transitioning. it shouldn't be as bad as yours though, maybe you have too many programs running. try shutting down some programs to make your pc faster =)

Is there a way to import .rmvb movie files into windows movie maker? None of them show up in my videos archive when I go to import video.
