Default The Book Of Mormon

Recently I was reading the Book Of Mormon. I found it to be interesting, but the language struck me as odd. Some of the words sounded biblical, but they seemed overused. I compared it to a couple different versions of the Bible and it matches up in vocab at points, but sometimes it says things that sound more modern than the Bible passages or they sound overdone compared to Biblical verse.

I was wondering what people thought of this. The Church of Latter Day Saints is relatively new compared to the more traditional churches of Christ. The founder, Joseph Smith, had already been convicted of fraud when he found the golden tablets inscribed with the book and people close to him said that revelations were commonly made when Smith needed something.

I wanted to get other peoples opinion and see if anyone else had read the Book Of Mormon. Discuss, I suppose.

Dude. That's really... not how it went down.

First of all, contrary to popular belief, the Book of Mormon is not the "Mormon Bible." It's a sister-book. Just clearing that up before any real discussion starts.

Second, the church wasn't "founded" by Joseph Smith. It was revived by him. I'm surprised you didn't know that, seeing as how you claim to have been reading it. :/

It's "relatively young" if you only date it back to its revival, but if you actually look at the history of the thing, it's much older. ._.

Learn2facts. :O!

Revival is a horrible term.

Assuming that the Book is to be true then it would be considered to be a 'revival' as you say. However, the Book Of Mormon can be considered equal to the Gospel of Judas. Neither are generally considered canon to the original Christian church.

For all intents and purposes, the Church of LDS was founded by Joseph Smith.

And the talk of 'revival' doesn't change the mysterious facts about Jospeh Smith's questionable finding of the tablets and that the religion often has revelations when it seems to suit it.

Fine. Would you prefer "re-founded"? If you want, I can make up a word that better suits your tastes.

I don't really see why I should enter a debate about this with you, seeing as how you wouldn't change your opinions even if I got a God himself to come down and tell you that the LDS people are right, and you personally are wrong.

:O

Actually, if God did, I would. But he won't, so I won't.

And founded still works best, considering the only record that this religion existed in the first place is on these mysterious golden plates that only Joseph Smith could look upon without being struck down. Oh, and the book that he dictated from said plates.

No one's saying they weren't plates.

._.

And you're only cementing the fact that there's no way you'd ever change your mind about how you feel about this religion, despite the fact that everything you think you know is probably just a misconception, so there's really no point in discussing this.

I'm a Mormon.

God restored the gospel through Joseph Smith. Joseph, through the inspiration of God and tools, translated the Book of Mormon.
Joseph wasn't the one who found the church. He greatly helped in its restoration, which took place after the apostasy.
The Book of Mormon is a recollection of true stories which took place on the American continent. These stories were made accounts through various prophets that lived on the American continent. Joseph Smith found the hidden plates which one of the last prophets had hidden and, like I said, through the instruction of God, was able to translate the plates.

Eh, I don't want to debate. Just want to clear things up. =/

Ah, thanks. I was gonna post something similar to what you said, Dee, but I wasn't sure if I'd butcher it or something. I'll leave it to the pros. :3 You can word it better than I can anyway. XD

I'm actually very thankful to you, Pickle, for speaking up. You were handling it great.
I just felt that, since I'm Mormon, I should post my input and clear things up.

Eh, yeah, that's pretty much the gist of the Mormon belief. I was a Mormon once as well, so I'd know.

It's been a while since I touched that book...I do believe I shall have to start reading it again. It's an interesting book, to say the least.

I am Mormon as well. =/ I was "Baptized" But I do not heed the words. I honstly do not like some of the ways they put it. Our Current Prophet scares me. I met him once when he was in St.Louis at the main Temple, and he told me I was lost in gods sight. >_>

It's a great read, in my opinion. I haven't read the whole thing, but I've touched base with each book in church and seminary. I personally enjoy the Doctrine and Covenants, which I don't believe comes with a standard copy of the Book of Mormon. The Doctrine and Convenants, for those of you who don't know, is another book written by Joseph Smith telling about the organization of our church and other events involving the prophet.

edit: Electropop, Gordon B. Hinckley, our current prophet, is a wonderful man. Do elaborate on what you said.

-snorts- He spoke with me when I asked, "If these words speak truth then why were drivin from St.Charles and St.louis itself."

St.Louis has only about 5 in the reginal area. He just looked at me and he said "You are confused on who you belive in And you seem lost"

My Mother said I should read the open my heart to god more. >_> He is a nice man, but he scares the crap out of me.
