Rep Power: 8 ![]() Level: 32 EXP: | One of the most common doctrines in major religion is the teaching of Hell, a place of firey punishment, torment, and torture. So generally, if you are a person who doesn't follow God and sins without repentance you are sent to Hell. This is a doctrine that is taught (in its various forms) in religions such as Hinduism, the Muslim faith, Christianity, and Taoism to name a few. Now while I know that many translations of the Bible do use the word "Hell," through my studies of the Bible I have come to the conclusion that this doctrine of being punished by means of Hell fire is not actually taught in the Bible. I also realize that this doctrine is one reason that some turn away from - let us just say the Christian faith because that is taught in just about all major Christian denominations. It is generally accepted as a doctrine that holds fast with Bible truths within these religions. I know some personally who thought it was contradictory for a God of love to punish someone by hell fire. Others just didn't like the doctrine of hell being used as an element of fear to keep them "under control" as some of them put it. So focusing on the Christian religion I was wondering, especially for those of you who do accept the Bible and practice some form of Christianity, what are your views on Hell? Do you view it as a literal place of judgment? A symbolic place? or something else? When you hear someone talk about Hell - what generally comes into your mind and why? Acts 2: 25-27 - For David speaketh concerning him [speaking about Jesus], I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. This alone without anything else would make me wonder about the doctrine. |

Rep Power: 4 ![]() Level: EXP: | In Hinduism, as far as I'm aware, the concept of hell is just suffering, earthly and spiritually. It's not a permanent place. As many of you probably know, most Hindus believe in a form of reincarnation. The goal is to break free from that cycle, and in order to do that, you must go through periods of suffering. So hell (in Hinduism) is not a scare tactic, just an inevitability. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() Level: 10 EXP: | Being homosexual isnt a mortal sin. Its venial. Its a lesser sin. You wont go to hell for it neccessarily. Mortal sins are murder. You will go to hell if you do not repent murder. We all sin. As far as God is concerned there isnt much of a difference from being gay or being a theif theorectically. |

Rep Power: 13 ![]() ![]() Level: 21 EXP: | I like how the word Hell just randomly appeared in later texts and is claimed to have always existed. I dislike the idea of punishment in religion. Any god shouldn't have to scare people into becoming followers. It ruins the idea of gods. |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() Level: 32 EXP: | Now I'm not supporting the idea of punishment by hell, but punishment for things is necessary at times. In any society. Break a law, you are punished. Be it human law or God's law. As for the type of punishment, that is a different story. That's where I would agree that Hell being used as punishment ruins the idea of a loving God. |

If you threaten people with eternity in a demonic world, they will convert to get out of punishment. Does any god want followers who go to him out of love or out of fear? |
