Except there is absolutely no benefit to be had by covering this up. In fact, it's detrimental to cover it up, because even though there would of course be panic, people would be able to have more time to prepare for it. That, and that there's been absolutely no sign that anything on Earth or outside it will spell the end of the world in three year's time.

Just because there is no sound reason for doing so doesn't mean people won't assume that there is no cover up. And true there isn't really a sign that the end is coming I was just pointing out that the people who despite this still believe that the end is just going to magically show up aren't likely to start disbelieving in it.

Actually, I believe the movie goes off of some theory that solar radiation from solar storms can somehow trigger earthquakes at fault line w/ lots of iron or something. earthquakes underwater create tsunamies. There will be a solar storm near the end of 2012, but even if it goes towards earth, considering the fact that the Earth's magnetoshere deflects solar wind it isn't a big problem. Also, there's this thing about yellowstone being an active supervolcano, (Supervolcano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) which usually explodes every 600,000-800,000 years, (or something like that) and it hasn't blown for around 640,000 years.

If you ask me, worrying about your inevitable death is just a waste of life.

This 2012 stuff is complete nonsense, but even if you were to die in the year 2012, there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. And why worry? The odds of these apocalyptic natural disasters occurring in your lifetime are extremely low compared to the odds of getting hit by a car or being murdered. People die every single day from things like that, so how come people aren't worried about it?

Predicting the end is absolutely pointless, and knowing when it will occur doesn't make a bit of difference.

Okay, scientists have been wrong. I think it says something about the end of the world in Revelations as well. You can't believe everything scientists say or the bible says. The bible was edited and they left loads of stuff out and scientists don't always know what they are talking about.

Thusly, the end of the world on 12/31/12 will not happen. Boy won't everyone who believe the world will end seem foolish when they count backwards from 10 on New Years eve 2012 and then it turns midnight, New Years day 2013.

Doesn't matter really. It won't happen 2012. And when it doesn't scientists will be like: Oh wait new year to predict.

But in order to figure out this non-sense I will personally read Revelations to figure out what the end of the world actually means from the original source. If it means th same thing everyone thinks then it's bull crap. If it doesn't then....well.....I was wrong to begin with.
