The documentary/science channels hopped on the bandwagon of all the end-of-the-world things when 2012 became a cultural meme, and have had a habit of just making up random things for it, rather than what's likely to happen

Ratings are awesome.

Seriously though, when they mention 2012, you hear this mocking tone in their voice; like they know we're stupid and they're not.

So a geomagnetic reversal? It'll affect the magnetic arrangement of the world, but I don't see how it'll cause a communications meltdown, since most means of communications don't really depend on the direction of the magnetic field.

Faraday's law my friend, large shifts in magnetic fields in a short span of time cause large voltages in conductors, often fatal to those conductors. Magnetic shifts aren't the real culprit, solar flares which are loaded with ions and electrons will bash against the magnetic field. Electronics are vital in communications, and we have no faraday cage for magnetic fields, unfortunately.

Solar flares are active constantly; the Earth has been hit by solar flares several times as large as the ones predicted to appear in 2012 within the last decade, to no effect. We have this cool thing called an atmosphere that tends to absorb radiation that would otherwise kill us. On that note, maybe Al Gore is on to something?

True, but the sun tends to have active periods and less active periods, we just can't predict it, since there have been two patterns. There have been observations of a cycle that has a period of twenty years (and a period includes a maximum and a minimum), and one of a hundred years (looking at registered activity over one or even more centuries). The atmosphere can't block ionising particles alone, the magnetic field has to lead a big share of the particles away, because there would be no atmosphere left if it wasn't for the magnetic field.

Originally everyone thought the world was gonna end when the year 2000 struck. Then it was May 5 2005. Now Dec 12 2012 and thats all I know of, who knows how many there have been. This shit has been going on for ages. What does it gain us? "Fear" as some call it. Mass suicides happen every freaking time some imbecile gives an idea of when its going to end for some stupid reason.

I think people have watched that crappy movie with Nicholas Cage in it one too many times and think that solar flares are what's going to kills us....

The Mayan calendar ending in 2012 is equivilant to the computer shit that went down in 1999. It doesn't mean the world will end... it just means that the Mayans were killed off before they could make their calendars for the next hundred years! Sheesh.
