Default DC Comics Restructured as DC Entertainment!

DC Universe: The Source Blog Archive WARNER BROS. CREATES DC ENTERTAINMENT
DC Universe: The Source Blog Archive A letter from Paul Levitz
DC Universe: The Source Blog Archive A letter from Diane Nelson

DC and Warner have been trying for years to find a way to completely capitalise on the DC franchises and properties. The comics have been doing great over the past couple of years, but nothing outside of that has been able to reflect it. I guess this is Warner taking action. Now, instead of having Paul Levitz reporting to Alan Horn, Diane Nelson will become the head of DC Entertainment and report directly to Jeff Robinov. Levitz is standing down and returning to writing, but also becoming an editor and creative consultant.

Rich Johnston has a pretty good article here regarding who Diane Nelson is (Who Watches DC Comics – Diane Nelson To Take Watchman Job At Warner? | Bleeding Cool Comic News & Rumors). Apparently she's responsible for the great relationship Warner have with J.K. Rowling.

Interesting that this is what happened. I know Rich Johnston found info about the Diane Nelson thing a while ago, and reported that she'd be taking some sort of DC related job at Warner. But not the restructuring/retitling into DC Entertainment. So for anyone speculating, this isn't directly a response to the Marvel/Disney deal.

Anyway, I'm interested to see what they can develop from this.

WB and DC have gone hand in hand for so long it's about time that something like this happened.

I know a lot of outside people are going to think that, but I'm pretty sure that something like this has been in the pipes for a long time. Last year there were reports of DC and Warner execs meeting to discuss something big, which everyone assumed to be a repurposed film slate. And quite obviously, it's not like Diane Nelson can just slide in and takeover without knowing about the company and its extensive characters.

What I like is that she is the point person for the relationship between J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. And from that we can see that she knows how to treat creators and how to market a franchise and capitalise on it while still honoring it.

CBR has a interview with the two here: Levitz & Nelson on DC Entertainment - Comic Book Resources
Seems they plan to make a few big announcements regarding other-media adaptations next January/February.

It's also sad that Levitz is stepping down. Rich Johnston considers this bigger news than the Disney/Marvel deal. Levitz is responsible for a great deal of how the comics industry is today. But he always wanted to return to writing, so I guess now he's happier.
