Default The BCS System

Ok, The BCS games are a long ways away, but the College Football regular season is practically finished. This is my opinion of who should go in the BCS National Championship game. Alabama is leading Auburn right now 29-0 in the 4th and Florida is blowing Florida State, so It's safe to say the winner of the SEC Championship game will be going to the National Championship game no doubt about it.

Now, comes the opponent, and whether it'll be Texas, Oklahoma, or Texas Tech. Tech is leading Baylor 35-28 right now. If I understand this mixed up BCS system; It doesn't matter what happens to Texas, if Tech wins, Texas is out of the equation because Tech handed Texas their first loss, and if Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State tonight, they'd get in the title game over Tech because they embarrassed Texas Tech 63-14or whatever that score was. If Tech is to win and Oklahoma loses, regardless of the blowout, Tech would get in jumping to the top spot of the Big 12 South and going to the National Championship game.

Now comes The Rose Bowl which could possibly be an Ohio State/USC rematch provided that Ohio State beats Penn State for the Big Ten Championship and USC is walking all over their division, so they're a lock-in for The Rose Bowl. I think I have that one right.

Ok, from here on, I'm confused. Depending on my predictions, the Suagr Bowl would be the loser of the SEC Championship game vs. ?

The Fiesta Bowl would be the loser of the Big 12 Championship game vs. ?

And finally, The Orange Bowl would be the ACC Champions (North Carolina IMO) vs ?

Can anybody explain this system and who faces who?

Eh, the BCS has been shitty for the last 5 years. They try to pair up teams traditionally instead of trying to have good games. Seriously, last year was USC vs. Illinois and Georgia vs. Hawaii. Both were a blowout. I would'nt be surprised if was pretty stupid this year as well.

I really don't like the BCS system too much and I think it should be freakin' playoffs. I mean, how sure are you that the undefeated Ball State Cardinals isn't better than Alabama or Florida..? lol.. j/k.. but still.. Though, I just wonder where the Cardinals are going to be, since they're practically the only Indiana team in this.

On a side note: Lol.. I can't believe it.. first the Bulldogs, now the Cardinals.. Is it just me or are the smaller Indiana schools becoming better than usual?

OU, TT and Texas had the same record after saturday so it depended on who was higher in the BCS rankings (which is stupid...why should anyone but the Big 12 decide who plays in its title game? that's another story). Because OU was higher, they get to play in the Big 12 title game. If they (somehow) lose to Missouri, then Texas may get the nod to play in the National Championship.

Big Ten doesn't have a Championship game, Penn State locked up the Rose Bowl weeks ago. Ohio State is hoping for an at large bid for the other BCS games. Since Oregon State lost, USC will play against Penn State assuming they don't choke against UCLA this weekend.

Predictions I've read say Utah

Quote:

If OU wins and goes to the National Championship, Texas will take the Fiesta Bowl and play whoever picks up the at large bid (Ohio State? Boise State? who knows).

Missouri won't go to a BCS game regardless how they perform in the Big 12 tile game.

Orange Bowl will probably be the ACC champion (Boston College or Virginia Tech) vs the Big East champion (Cincinnati)

Of course, these are only predictions, it ultimately ends up being which bowl picks who. We should know for sure by the 7th.

I don't really care to much for the BCS, but at the same time I don't think playoffs will work. What you do is take top 2 teams and let them play. Playoffs would be ideal, but I really don't want to see college football pretty much end up going to the same way as every other sport.

Wel, I don't exactly want to be like the other sports, but the way it's set-up now, it's just plain unfair for the teams that worked their asses off all year, only to be ignored because they're a smaller college. I mean, sure, maybe they can't beat the bigger colleges, but why not give them the shot? It some respect, I don't want play-offs because it would probably mess-up the traditional bowl schedualing, but with the way things are, I think there should at least be a short playoff, for the top 8-16 teams. Well, that's four weeks/ a month, but still..

Yeah but the problem they wouldn't be able to do it unless they either cut the season short by a few games or they use all of December for it. Problem with using December is the fact that is the time for Bowl games and winners of divisions as well as a lot of these players are taking their finals for classes as well. Also they really don't want to extend the football season by a month because then they are sort of competing against the NFL playoffs. I think the BCS system isn't great, but right now I don't think there is a better system for college.

Ehh.. actually, after reading this ( Wetzel's playoff plan: I'll drink to that - College Football - Rivals.com ), I think Playoffs might actually work, if you were to go by something similar to this guy's plans.

I still don't see it working. In order for you to really do a playoffs I think you would mainly have to start midway through December. That leaves 2 weeks before the season is officially over. Though you need to factor in Christmas and most of these kids will want to go home. That leaves 2 weeks meaning only 4 teams could be in the playoffs. I know it is the beginning of December now and championship games are starting, but like my school I have finals all next week which means study/crunching time. I think most schools will tend to have finals this or next week which thus puts playoffs at a no because they are still students in school and not just athelets. You might be able to go 3 weeks and just barely go into the NFL playoff year. Either way if they would switch to a playoff I think max teams you could do is the top 8. 16 would put to long and they do have scheduling they end up having to work with because you got to let teams play their division champsion games which is this week. Then you got to finish up all the bowls game usually before NFL playoffs which is about 5 weeks. Then you got to factor in vacation for plays so that is maybe a week to a week and a half, then you have to put time for preparations for the game. SO I think they have 3 weeks to work with.

Anyway the only reason people talk about a playoff is because their favorite teams get left out of the BIG game.
