Default Sci-Fi

So, I think that it's safe to say that I've basically seen jack regarding the genre of science-fiction. There's the Heroes thread...a couple of Star Wars threads, here and there, but that's about it, as far as I've seen.

Anyways, seeing as how there apparently isn't a big enough fanbase for the seperate components of sci-fi (books, movies, TV shows, individual franchises, etc.), I figured there'd be more successful discussions about sci-fi if I presented a thread pertaining to the genre as a whole. So have at it. Discuss your likes, dislikes, etc....don't worry about it being strictly sci-fi. The line between general fantasy and sci-fi can be a bit hard to distinguish, I know.

Seeing as how my sci-fi knowledge is limited, it would be a bit presumptuous to really call myself a fan, but I'm hoping that you guys can help me out with that my reccommending some good stuff. Really, all I've been exposed to is: Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut), some of Neil Gaiman's stuff (dunno if that really counts), X-Men (a few comics as a kid, cartoons, movies), Star Wars, X-Files (mostly when I was younger), Heroes, Final Fantasy...mostly modern stuff. I'm ashamed to admit that I've hardly seen ANY Star Trek. However, in the past year or so, I've become an AVID fan of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series.

...Any takers?

Yes, and its really good. I think that they are doing a 7 hour live episode for Halloween.

Other series that I would recommend are Stargate SG-1 (it ended in summer of 07), I like seasons 1-8 more than 9-10, although the last two had some good episodes such as 200, in which I think everyone really was on crack. I also recommend Stargate Atlantis, which will ending in with its 5th season (this one). They are both moving to direct to DVD movies. SG1 has two already, but I've only seen the second one (Stargate Continuum). Only watch the movies if you seen majority of the show. If you watch SG1, watch seasons 1-2 before you start on season 3, I promise, you will die of shock.

I have a lot of his books, some of them are really quite obscure and bizarre. VALIS is seriously weird.

I definetly love sci-fi.

However not as much as I used to but I still really like it a lot.

I dont watch sci fi shows that often, I get my sci-fi fix through books.

My favorites would have to be Michael Chriton, Peter Benchly, also books by a few others.

Also if this site starts to incite members I ask to be made one A.S.A.P. PLEASE

Yeah, my friend really likes Stargate. I'm pretty sure he has at least a couple of seasons on DVD...I'll check them out.

And yeah, Dune counts, though I was not a big fan of it. It is VERY guy-oriented, I think. Which is fine, it just doesn't appeal to me since I'm a girl. I remember before I started reading, my dad and all of my guy friends were like, "OMFG, IT'S AWESOME, YOU'LL LOVE IT." Lol, not so much...

*sigh* Still no BSG fans other than Manchester Black. Alas.
