As far as I can tell, it seems they use the extra content to flesh out characters or events. Radagast gets a LOT more screentime, and they connected the Thorin oak-shield backstory to the orcs chasing them. And included some Gandalf scenes that emphasise the Necromancer. All in all, I see it as a way to make the trilogy more coherent, less episodic than the book, appeal to newcomers, and tie it better to Lord of the Rings. :) Yup, I'm sure it's fine.

Gandalf specifically mentioned 5, so no worries there. :) Peter Jackson is a huge Tolkien nerd, I'm sure he's got this handled. Everything seems to check ok so far, to me. ^^ Can't wait till "The Desolation of Smaug" this December.

I know, but from the bits of filler in "An Unexpected Journey", it seems its all from Tolkien's notes and Appendices. I'd rather have it spread out and stuff added to it then crammed together and stuff be left out.

The MP Units were being built in NERV (you can see hundreds of hands and launch pads, etc) and I think the "failures of infinity" are humans. D: I think the humans either turned into LCL or they turned into those LCL spire Eva figures.
Well, Vessel of Adam is what Rei Q and Unit 09 were being called. I think it's a possibility that Mark 06, Unit 01 and 13 are actually the four "Adam's" from Second Impact. They all have been used to initiate it in some way...
I hate that Mari hung back constantly though. NO WONDER ASUKA WAS SO BEAT UP if Mari was just her support. I'm still on board the sequel theory but I obviously have to wait for 4.0 to really be able to decide if it's true or not. My impression is that Eva is in an infinite loop and no matter what they do, they'll end up in this cycle over and over. Events will change but ultimately the cycle will repeat.
Well, maybe he'll appear like he did in EoE. We will see!
Misato seemed to know a shit load about NERV's operations in the Rebuild, so yeah, Kaji could be part of the intel she has now but we have to remember she had a much higher clearance than she did in NGE.

Sobs over Toji. Sobs for Shinji. I'm hoping Kaji is touched on in 4.0, even if it's just an explanation. I'd be surprised if Misato took orders from him, though. Misato is perfectly capable of being in charge of a team as she's shown excellent judgement in the past.
We don't REALLY know what IPEA is though so we can't say that for certain. And if IPEA was pouring their resources into Wille, I feel like Unit 02 and Asuka wouldn't have had such patchjobs. Luckily it seems like Mari has grown to care for Asuka to a degree so whatever she's planning, I hope it isn't too terrible.
It's not Gendo and Mari isn't there. People think her mother is, but I don't understand why they assume that woman is her mother? It could easily by Kyoko because of the reddish hair. It does look like a young Fuyutsuki though.

It seems like that was something implemented early on, though. A fail safe if Rei Q (like the dummy plug) failed to follow orders. I like that Asuka is basically the one to sort of "order" Rei to do what she wants. It kind of carries over from Rei II thanking her and Asuka smiling in 2.22. It sounds like Misato just informed Asuka (and probably Mari) about everything she knew regarding SEELE and NERV. Misato relies on Asuka the whole movie. Not Mari. Asuka. It's also wonderful carryover from 2.22 since they kind of connected before Asuka got in the Angel.
