i really did not like the book, it was a slow read and it lost my intrest quite fast. it seemed to me that not only did they act immaturely, but they ended up killing eachother. i understand the stress that they were under, but that is no excuse to start killing the only people they had left.

They were children, of course they were going to be immature, they were thrown into an environment that they had no control over and their fears of the monster etc caused them to act out in ways that they would not normally act in. I fully agree that the deaths can not be excused, but they were just children. That is reflected with the way they all stand on the sand crying when they are finally saved.

They go from children who think they know everything to having to grow up faster than any child should and then they are returned back to their childish state once more. Ralph is one of the oldest boys and even he is only 12 (IIRC)

I read it for the first time about half a year ago, it was pretty good. I'm pretty sure I wasn't totally ignorant about the symbolism. . .

>__________> Yes, there were excuses. It's human nature. Fear drives men to do dastardly things. You see, you say the deaths can't be excused, but it was do or die... much like the world is here. They were scared... who the hell wouldn't be?

Yesh, exactly. It's been far too long since I've read this book. Perhaps I should pick it up again x3 That or look for I Am Legend O.o

I don't recall any bestiality.

And a decent opinion would be excellent, instead of just restating what has been said.

With terrible writing skills, I might add.

"I GOT THE CONCH!!"
"shut up Piggy."
...that's one of the few things I remember happening. Far too much. Lol.

We read it in English last semester, it really was a great book. It's dripping of symbolism, so it was fun to figure out which boy was what view or what they represented in adult society.

After we finished the book, we watched the movie. One of my favorite lines was in the beginning when Jack or Ralph or someone is saying they can survive because "We're British, and the British are the best at everything!"

i read the book in 7th grade, and i was a bit too young to fully grasp the concepts of the book (i dont know how many times i read the authors note in the back, which only confused me more!)

i thought the book was captivating, yes a bit dull in some places, but i loved it.
i think i cried when the big beasty thing killed Simon, and his body was found floating on the shores of the beach...(was it simon? i think i need to re read that book >_<)

its more of an adult book, but maybe some kids are mature enough to understand all of it, the symbolism was pretty amazing too.

He was actually killed by the rest of the kids.

And the scene that described Simon laying on the beach was probably my favorite of the whole novel.

haha, well, its obvious i need to pick that up again!

and despite its creepyness, thats one of my fave parts too.
it reminds me of Peter and the Starcatchers...because they are both "lost boys"
on an island...but not really

overall, if your squeemish, dont read the book!

^ I'm very squeamish, and for me it didn't take that much effort to read it.

I mean, there's a pig hunting scene now and then but it's not that bad.

It might be more of an emotional thing then physical. Sure, the rotting pig head was gross, but the actions of some of the boys were far more unnerving.

It was a scene that was beautifully written and IMO reflected the idea of him representing religion, it was also very very sad.

QFT

It was the actions of the boys that was disturbing, that was what had a bigger impact, the pig head on a stick was gross to say the least, but the boys turning into savages and facing chaos and total destruction made for far more of a chill.

He said Bestiallity because one of the interpreted symbols of the pig was sexual desire. Or maybe he meant they sexed it when they shoved a spear 'right up it's ass.'
