This thread was made mainly with cartoons in mind, I'm pretty sure, but I agree with Stooge. I've gone back and watched/read quite a few things I loved as a child that just did NOT stand the test of time.

Though I also agree the 90s cartoons were far more intelligent/mature. Hey Arnold alone brought the quality of 90s cartoons above and beyond any other generation's intellectual standards. But I this is due to the thought process of that time in our culture. Generation X was all about doing what shouldn't be done. Be it mixing bright purple with neon green, or putting out a kids show that talked about the tragedy of war and the difficulties of immigration as a Christmas special. Today's generation is less about that, and simply more about having fun. That's why mindless cartoons like Adventure Time thrive the way they do.

I think that many of the shows these days are definitely not as great as the ones back when I was a kid. It's like there's just not any effort anymore. At least with shows in the past, I felt like maybe I learned something after watching a show, and the jokes were corny but at least somewhat funny. But now they try too hard to be funny, and they're really not. And it's all just a bunch of random meaningless stuff. And there were shows that started out awesome but now they're just not as entertaining. That being said, there are some shows now that are really good. I can only hope that more shows like that will continue to come up.

And I honestly don't think it's just the quality of cartoons. The quality of TV shows and movies and the like in general has fallen imo. I would probably watch more shows targeted towards my age group if they were entertaining. But the fact is I find myself more interested in programs geared towards younger and/or older audiences. I don't think I'd care so much that cartoons nowadays sucked if I had anything better to watch on TV. That's why I've given up on TV for the most part. Most things I watch now, I watch online.

I agree the shows aren't what they where back in the day. From what I remember it was mostly cartoons, and now its all shows like ICarly and Victorious. I mean Spongebob is still around, and its still pretty funny especially with Patrick :D

Victorious is ok I can tolerate it, just some character acts gets stale quick.

ICarly used to be one of my favs but now it sucks.

I remember the good old days with AHHHHHH Real Monsters!, Red and Stempy, Rocko's Modern Life, and Hey Arnold!

Cartoon Network is doing one thing right, keeping Tom and Jerry at noon. I also like the new shows Looney Tune Show (thats based off of the real world), Adventure Time, and Regular Show.

Guys, I'm one of the people that don't think it's because of age.

I watched Hey Arnold on Netlfix; how can anyone compare it to Nick shows that are on now? They obviously dumbed down spongebob and fairly odd parents.

I completely agree with you. The 90's really had more sophisticated cartoons, hell, I learned my childhood belief system from them, and only them (parents sucked) If I tried to do that nowadays, I'd end up blowing bubbles all the time and aspiring to be a frycook. I think a big reason for that was, and I Hate to bring this up, but events like 9/11, the war, the economy, etc. People aren't looking for lessons anymore, their looking for mindless drabble and escapism.

Hate all you want, but I will love and tolerate the Shit out of you.

The only reason I watch CN is because of Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball. Every other new show should go. And yes, that includes new Pokemon anime, new Beyblade, Bakugan, etc. All of those shows suck, and need to be replaced with Adventure Time :D

Disney, I only watch Phineas and Ferb.

As for Nick, I don't even look at it.

My interest in cartoons on Nick/Disney/CN died with Toonami.

Netflix streaming is the only place I go to watch cartoons nowadays.

I'm sure when kids today get older they'll complain about how terrible the "new whatever" is.

I believe T.V has fallen in general.
Yeah there are still some quality shows out there but in general most networks bad reality shows...

but to answer the question yeah its not exactly that the shows have fallen. its more of a mixture of that; growing out of them, networks turning to badly plotted live action shows/ reality shows...

oh yeah shows have taken a step back imo on the animation side. Alot of shows these days look like my 5 year old cousin drew them... cough... cough... adventure time.... cough... cough...

If you want to game with me send me a PM and i will send you friend codes, etc...

they cater to a new group of children. they are not looking to satisfy the old audience but their new one, and what this audience wants is what's out now. Seriously, if you ask a kid about their favorite show they'll name the stuff that we relatively dislike nowadays, and if we showed them what we loved, they'd probably be bored of it or 'not get it.'
