| Member | Wow. I didn't think anyone else in the world had read this book. Russel Banks essentially became my new favorite author after I received Rule of the Bone from my friend last August for my birthday. It was definitely inspiring to me; but in retrospect, the first thing that comes to mind when I think about that book is the massive amount of pot smoking that took place. Also, the ending was a bit lackluster, I felt, but it was still fantastic overall. Plus, I-Man was one of the few book characters I've ever truly respected. :3 Shuri/Eli |

| the dank | Yah man, but a lot of it when they were in Jamaica was peyote, i believe. I love this book, the ending was, as you said, lackluster, but it was also really meaningful. It's like, essentially you really learn who your real friends are. Man, I'm so glad someone else has read this and liked it. |

| Member | I know. I think we're pretty much alone in this, though. xD And you're right about the ending. It was very symbolic and it fit with the rest of the novel's kind of easy-going feel. People compare it to Catcher in the Rye, but I don't think that's a very fair analogy because Rule of the Bone is much more honest and frank about dealing with the teenage condition. I mean, having read both books as an adolescent, I would say I related way more to Bone than to Holden Caulfield. Plus, Rule of the Bone was just way more engaging than Catcher. And did you totally get shivers throughout the entire dream sequence where Bone's tripping out on that strong peyote in the cave and seeing images of slaves getting raped and whatnot? That definitely tops the list of intense book scenes I've read. x.x' Shuri/Eli |
