Still, publishing under an actual company is best for getting your work noticed. Just keep searching for the right firm. |

Try to look for genre-specific publishers -- if your story is sci-fi, for example, find a sci-fi-centralized publishing company, or at least a company that is looking for sci-fi stories to publish. Print your novel on some nice paper, type up a little cover letter introducing yourself and your novel, and put it in a package along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and send it to the publisher you're interested in. Then you wait and hope for the best. Be sure to include your contact information -- if you hear from them, they're interested. If you don't hear from them, you might want to send them a polite email or phone call to see if they received it, but they're most likely not interested. Or, you could get an agent to basically do all that stuff for you. This requires paying them with no actual guarantee of getting published, but your chances of getting published will probably be higher if it's an agent with a good reputation/good connections. Also, there are some not-so-nice publishers out there that try to make a buck by asking you to have your novel professionally edited. Generally they're in cahoots with the editors, asking you to pay a ridiculous sum up-front for the editors to edit your novel, and then when they're done they refuse to publish it anyway. If you get an offer like this, hold onto your money and wait for a not-so-greedy publisher to roll around. Anyway, this is just from a fellow wanna-get-published to another, so don't take my word as gospel. Read up, get educated, take everything with a grain of salt, but most importantly be patient. We got a lot of competition out there. Here's hopin'. |

I've known people who wrote a book of a series, then signed a contract to get it published. Only problem is, that contract gave them the rights to the sequels; so, they could just hand your property over to another one of their more well-knwon authors and have it published under their name. Just ask Stephen King, lol. |
