Rep Power: 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() Level: 20 EXP: | Has anyone here read or is reading The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan? It's very good, despite its length, and is a great series to immerse oneself in, as there are too many details to skim over. It concerns a wide cast of characters, good, evil, and neutral, too many to go into detail about, but basically, it is about the Dragon, a prohecised being said to both save the world and destroy it. He is the reincarnation of Lews Therin Telamon, an Aes Sedai (magic-user) who ages ago went mad, along with all other male Aes Sedai. He is prophecised to slay the Dark One, an omnipotent being in control of all things evil, along with his most powerful minions, the Forsaken. They are the most powerful Aes Sedai in the world, both male and female, with the male being protected from the madness by the Dark One. I could ramble on and on about this series, and eventually end up retelling it, so I'll just revert back to my initial question: Has anyone here read The Wheel of Time series? I'm currently reading the sixth (there are twelve in all), Lord of Chaos. |

| none of our secrets are physical | I've been advised to read this numerous times by my boyfriend, friends etc, but haven't gotten around to doing it. It sounds like the sort of thing I'd love, but I am hard pressed to find the time to read 12 books. Word on the street is that they're making these into a films as well. |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() Level: 20 EXP: | Hopefully they'll stay a little more true to the books, as opposed to the Lord of the Rings movies. But since the story is so long complicated, they're likely to even leave more out. But what I'm really concerned about is if it'll turn into an onslaught of children's merchandise like so many good movie series before it. *shudder* |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() Level: EXP: | I love these books! My dad turned me on to them. They are some of my absolute favorite books. You're opening post to this was spot on, Ordeith. Definitely drew me in. Now I want to re-read them. In my opinion, only 12 books is crazy. If you've payed attention to the details. There are so many loose ends that have to be tied up. Like, too many to count. If you ask me, it definitely needs to go into more than twelve books. The one thing that upsets me, is that Robert Jordan died last year. Granted, TOR Books has hired Sanderson to finish it off, using his notes and recordings and secrets passed on to Jordan's family, but it won't be the same. You'll easily recognize where Jordan left off and where Sanderson picked up. Also, seeing these in theater would be AMAZING....if they could condense each book into a 3 hour time slot. But that would involve so much stuff being cut out, so I'm thinking they should make the movies with everything included, but then release them in stores instead of theater to DVD/ Blu-ray. By chance, Ordeith, does your username COME from this series? It has been so long since I've read these books (almost a year and a half) and I can hardly await for the first part of the last book A Memory of Light, which is called The Gathering Storm. It comes out on November 3, 2009, and I'm already looking for the first book, The Eye Of The World, on my bookshelf. I may need to invest in a new one, it's so old and battered. It's paperback =] |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() Level: 20 EXP: | Ah, it's certainly a good sight to see another enthused reader, along with someone who can recognize the source of my username, hah! As for the number of books, Robert Jordan's planned spoilers were all recorded in his plotline notes, which already spanned the length of the entire book. While I'm sure that there are a few resolutions that needed revisioin, as the only way he could have created notes that spanned the entire book is if these notes were very rough, I'm confident that even if Brian Sanderson's writing style pales in horrible comparison to Jordan's, the author's original concept will remain mostly intact. And the prospect of a movie series for The Wheel of Time both excites me and makes me cringe; they will either exclude so mcuh from the books that it ruins Jordan's vision, or include everything in such detail that it will either take twenty movies to tell the story or be comprised of several extremely long movies that will lose my interest. However, Universal Studios (I believe) have already announced about a year or two ago that a movie was to be in production; I suppose we'll have to simply wait and see. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() Level: EXP: | Technically, there will be 15 books, as the last one will be split into 3, by the way. |

Rep Power: 8 ![]() ![]() ![]() Level: 20 EXP: | Though if you include the two halves that comprised the first book, it would total 16. But the full volumes are the only books that I'll be concerning myself with in terms of numbers. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() Level: EXP: | They didn't cut the first book in half until only recently. But you make a point. If they make this into a movie, do you think they'd make it so we can SEE the weaves the Aes Sedai create? Or it'll just be like, arm waving and them BAM! fireball. |
