in kh1 leon didnt like to be called squall. he never said why. dose anyone know?
its not like he was a criminal or anything.

I believe he was ashamed that he couldn't protect Radiant Garden from falling into darkness.

So he took a new identity.

I think it was said at some official source.

he didnt want to meddle with other world so he made a alias,

like he mentioned in KH1, if you would visit him in the librarys ( after the Riku/ansem fight) he says: 'Now that ansem is gone, I can go back to using my real name'.

or soemthing like that

I think he prefers to be called Leon, because he felt that he was responsible for the destruction of his world. He also didn't want anyone to know him, so then he could live a new life. He didn't want to think of his past.
