Default Why does Ansem possess Riku's body?
So I'm going through and playing all the games in the series again since it's been so long when I thought about something I never really considered. Why does Ansem possess Riku's body in Hollow Bastion? Does it have to do with the fact that Ansem wears a robe and is translucent until this point?

But if there is some particular reason why Ansem does this, why does he suddenly have his own body after you defeat Riku?

No I don't think so. If it was Riku's body wouldn't it be destroyed after Sora Defeated it? I always thought the brown cloaked figured was Ansem's heartless. He possessed Riku so he would have a second body in case he died. Which worked for a while.

Ansem SoD seemed to be a very special type of Heartless that was incapable of materializing its own physical form from the darkness within its heart. As a result, Ansem SoD needed to seize another person's vessel. When Riku opened his heart, it enabled Ansem SoD to use Riku's darkness to control Riku's vessel. At first, the vessel Ansem SoD manipulated still resembled Riku, but after the Final Keyhole was complete, Ansem SoD altered Riku's vessel into a form that better suited him.

After the light of Kingdom Hearts vanquished Ansem SoD, Riku's vessel was sent into the Realm of Darkness where it reunited with Riku's heart. Riku was in possession of his heart and vessel again, but in CoM'R/R, it is learned that a piece of Ansem SoD was left behind inside Riku and attempted once again to seize control over Riku's vessel by using Riku's own darkness.

What do you mean?

Like KoV said, it was reunited with Riku after Ansem SoD gets defeated for good. (Well, you know what I mean.)

It was. :I Ansem SoD/Xehanort's Heartless, whatever you call him, that's who he was.

I'm assuming it's the 9+ years of exposing his heart to the elements like that. :/

Normal Heartless have that layer of darkness to protect them; Ansem SoD doesn't have that.

no when light came out of Kingdom Hearts,riku return to his normal self.remember after you fight riku the second time and ansem takes over his body and trys to attack them,you see riku's spirit stoping him

"Riku's vessel was sent into the Realm of Darkness where it reunited with Riku's heart." (I dont know how to make italisized quotes) If thats true then that means Riku lost his heart at some point and has a nobody we dont know about yet.

No, Riku never had a Nobody
Spoilers – Days + CoM…
Unless we want to count Repliku but it's a Replica shaped after him so I don't count it as 'his'

Losing your Heart = becoming a Heartless. Kairi never lost her Heart, for instance. Hence why the only reason Namine is in existence is Sora.
No Heartless = No Nobody. And Riku never became a Heartless.

Seems like this was a pretty decent discussion to start up. Doesn't really seem to be an apparent answer. Some of these theories make sense though.

They're not theories. XH had a pretty good reason to go after Riku, both because the need of his own Body, and Riku's affinity with the Keyblade. He remained inside Riku's Body even after he was defeated and the Body and Soul returned to Riku, hence the mess-up in Reverse-Rebirth and KH2 o_O
