ok so i think a keyblade itself without the key chain is a representation of a persons heart. Now the keychain trinket thing, like kingdom key's mickey mouse symbol is a memory of another person. The chain connecting them is the tie of memories between the two hearts. So essentially your heart is altered and strengthened by every memory you have... well thats my theory

We for sure know that memories have a connection to the keyblades. In the directors secret report Nomura talks about how Roxas' keyblades are what sora loses at castle oblivion, aka memories. He also states how this has a connection to Xehanorts memories.

In that same report Nomura talks about artificial keyblades similar to the one Riku had in the original kh. I think that the kyblades in the secret movie are artificial, maybe made out of hearts like the one Riku had.
