You cannot do a direct boot method like you would usually do for the games you bought at your nearby stores. The only way to do a normal boot would be if you had a Japanese PS2 to play KH2:FM+. But since your PS2 is most likely from a different region, which I believe is PAL, you need Swap Magic in order to play KH2:FM+. How does Swap Magic work? It's similar to booting cheat codes with Gameshark 2 except you don't press the eject button when you need to swap disc. You either use a slide card if you have a fat, bulky PS2 or install the magic key set if you have a slim PS2. Why the need for these tools? Because you need to swap disc while your PS2 doesn't detect the swap. If the PS2 does detect the swap from taking place? Then your PS2 will try to authenticate its region and/or legitimacy, and well, you get the red screen if it fails to get pass its security. So to get pass this checkpoint, you don't trigger it as in you don't press that eject button on your PS2 to swap disc. As for how to use the tools? There are tutorials available around the net. By the way, I do believe PS3s cannot be used with Swap Magic as far as I know although it's been months since I last checked if someone managed to do so, which I believe hasn't happened yet. | |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | Pretty much. Usually when you buy the Swap Magic disc set, it'll automatically come with the magic key sets. The magic key set is basically 3 keys used in conjunction with SM so you can play import games on your slim PS2. You must have these keys installed before you can use SM properly. |

Rep Power: 2 ![]() | How come you can't just put the swap magic in and just press the eject button without pressing the reset button? Never mind. I know the answer. |

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Okay, now I don't know a thing about technology and such, so my questions are probably just dumb. -.- Anyway, I just want to know if there's a cheap way for me to play KHFM+. I don't even know if it'll be worth it if they make it available everywhere else besides Japan in a year or so. :| I have the old bulky model of PS2, not the slim version, but I heard that the only way to play games for the NTSC-J on the US PS2 is to use a mod chip or a regional converter. *sigh* I'm in a jam here. Help, please? It'd be much appreciated. |

That's why you can't automatically play a game you bought from Japan on your U.S. console because there's a specific region code your system will only read. To bypass this, we use such things like mod-chips, Swap Magic and exploits to get through this. Since the video resolutions used in the U.S. and Japan are nearly identical/the same, there is no video display problems when you finally manage to play a Japanese game on your American PS2 or vice versa (there are very rare instances there might be, but those are in an obsolete number to really care about). However, if you play a game from the U.S. or Japan on your European PS2, sometimes you'll occasionally encounter a very distorted image, a complete black screen or black bars and such. To fix this, you get something like a PAL2NTSC converter to fix this. Though the converter is there, it can't fixed some games. Also, some mod-chips have a special feature that tries to auto-patch it. Varies between brand really. Swap Magic would be your most ideal method to play import games. It costs roughly 30 dollars or less if you manage to look hard. When you use Swap Magic, usually it'll come with a slide card and a magic key set. The slide card is for you to use in conjunction with fat, bulky PS2s and the magic key set for the slim PS2s.
