Bug with Counterattack?

I started playing KH1 the other day for nostalgia, and everything was fine until I picked up the Oblivion keyblade. Suddenly, Counterattack stopped working at all. Yes, I had the ability equipped. After I got Lionheart keyblade, I had the same problem. So for further testing, I loaded up my original save game from way back in the day - Level 100 with all the best stuff. Anyway, I tried out Counterattack, mostly on Defenders and the Fat heartless, with a variety of keyblades and Counterattack worked with less than half of them.

What's going on here? Is this a bug or is there some mechanic involved with the ability that I'm not understanding?

Maybe it's the Heartless you used the ability on. I don't think it works against the Large Bodies and Defenders because they're invulnerable from the front. Every Keyblade should use that ability. Try Heartless that can easily be beaten like the shadows, powerwilds, etc.

i'm pretty sure the way counterattack is used is altered once you equip guard.

Seriously? Wow, Counterguard worked for every Keyblade I used.
