I hate hearing about this every year. there was no school fro me and they evacuated the east part of my city but we stayed cause it wasn't that close. people were evacuated to the ymca thing near my house but its over now. well...not really...now that everythings burned the cycle continues cause once the rain comes the floods will be here. cali has wierd weather but thats how it cleans itself. | |

I hate hearing about this every year. | The problem isn't living in forest areas. The real problem is keeping the fuel for fires in check. There are tons of building codes for properties in forests or near forests. They cannot have vegetation within so many feet of their buildings, and the buildings have to be made of certain less flammable materials. It's not like people are just plopping down houses made of matches. One of the things that causes such huge fires is because people are not allowed to remove any dead wood from the area, meaning that the fires can get high enough to reach up the trees. Some people claim removing the dead wood would disrupt the natural environment, but ultimately you'd still be getting all the benefits from the fires from the burning grasses.

This one just happen to be all at once. He is wrong about one thing though. the fires didn't happen in forested areas. They spread to forested areas. They started in chaparral, where certain plants are liable to set on fire at crazy times, coupled with the santa anna winds caused the fire to spread out of control. Just bad timing. But it happens ever year, so no one was really surprised at the timing Just the size.
