Social Acceptance Among Teens Discussion

Basically this thread is for all major topics of discussion concerning what teenagers do today to be "socially accepted." I hope for all of us to discuss "social fads" and why people change themselves to be more accepted. Some of them are-

-Fashion styles (i.e. Emo, goth, valleygirl, etc.)
-Actions done to get acceptance
-and in-depth looks into others

Anything to start is up for grabs.

The hair, the piercings, the attitudes. Seriously, it's so goddamn stupid and juvenile. When they turn 20, they're all going to go "OSH--! WTFAMIDOING!?". And this **********/non-********** bull, it's really got to stop. Hypocrisy is only funny if used right.

If you really want to be yourself, don't place yourself into a genre. Do whatever you want to do and feel comfortable doing. And I bet it can't be that comfortable wearing those skinny jeans.

Johnny Stooge, my boy, you're spot on! Real mates accept you for who you are. People that will only accept you if you do stuff they do just aren't real mates. A bit of advice that I was told eons ago: "Say what you want to say and do what you want to do, for those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter". Life is about going out and enjoying yourself, not moping about the smallest things. You only live once!

hmm good topic! well in my school the "popular kids" are the ones who participate in sports. I think this is totally ridiculus. I have helped out in some of the sports (managing) and it is ridiculus the special treatment these people get. All these people wear the same clothes, shop at the same stores, watch the same shows and movies, and have no ounce of individuality whatsoever.

Then theres the extremeists, the "goths", who look down upon the way those people act. (unfortunately there aren't enough emos in my school to make them their own group, it would literally be about three people)

My friends and I are in our own group, we dont care what others say, or what other influences are around us, we do what we want to and when we want to. And we are totally happy with that. Because we dont pressure ourselves to be on top or stick to one style all the time, we have time to enjoy life as it is.

You're ALWAYS in with a group in school, if you realise it or not doesn't matter.

The musical students, the sports students, the goths, the "scaffs", the retards, and whatever else there is. It's how people 'survive' in school, by every group having these labels. Think Mean Girls, but a little dulled down.

I guess I was a part of the 'outcasts'. None of us really fit/liked being a part of any other groups, so we all bonded, and it worked. I'm no longer in high school and I'm still friends with all but one of them. We had a girl who wore sports clothes in our group, a goth, a 'witch', myself and another guy who was just.. normal, I guess.

I wouldn't have had it any other way. We had no expectations for anyone else we knew. You didn't have to wear a certain style, like the OC (Oh god, the OCers >_>), be good at a certain things, which is why it worked as well as it did.

I have piercings and plan on getting more... well in my ears only. And I'm not Goth or emo...

Anyways, My friends are also what would be considered "The Outcasts". I'm also what my friends call me, os our kind of leader... I dunno why, they just chose me. I get along with most people, but I hate what we call "Preps". We just want to shot them. Everyone else we get along with.

Main point is, try being nice and if they're still asses, get revenge >:D

While in choir, only a few of my friends are in it. I'm not an athlete either. So I'm not really in any of the "big" groups. Most of my friends are scattered throughout my grade, and I've got a few outside of my grade as well.

I know I should be myself, which I do, but I can't stand how girls find boys who are disruptive in class, jump kids, ride dirty, and are absolutely fcuktards attractive. Oh, woopy, I ride a skateboard so I am a skater. only the freaky girls with no friends would dare date me. No, no, I like metal bands so I am goth.

I can't wait until I get to highschool, which is a bit contradictory because it will just get worse.

Here's a question, since this thread hardly seems intel at this point.

What exactly is wrong with school cliques? Why are emos so "bad?" Or "goths?" Do they actively interrupt your own activities and school experience, or is it merely an annoying passive interruption?

Well, I find eight out of ten emos are just outright attention whores, hogging the spotlight. I have no problems with the way they dress because some of my best friends dress goth, yet have the most upbeat and happy personalities I have ever met.

Now, the "gangstahs" at my school are filled with shit. There is no other way to describe it. Having to put up with it on a day to day basis is driving me to the point where my passiveness is nearly gone.

And I find that alot of my classmates are just too friggin' lazy. My teacher is passing out free marks for easy grades, and everyone groans like it's a freaking 12 page essay to write. How 10 one word questions equals that much work is only something extreme ADD may have a hope of answering.

Call me a social butterfly, but I have friends in a lot of "cliques". I think It'll work for me later because jobs are never like that. Neither are Cadet camps, come to think of it...well, except for the camp you're in.

Itsnot just look just bothers me. Like you said, it the reason WHY there are that way, mostly for attention. If a person was really to a point where dressing "emo" would express who they are, than its no problem with me, its just the assumption that more attention is given in that state of look and attitude.

Its stupid, isn't it? When what would be considered normal people, hwo have ordinary homes, feel it "expresses" who they are by having an attitdudde problem, and claiming that "life is tough" in their "ghetto" homes. I hate this whole lifestyle in general. Seriously, does anyone think that talking in a crude form of english, and wearing "gangsta" clothes, is gonna make me respect, even fear you? I think not.
