| A FAWKING KEY-TRIKE? STOOPID IDEA!! | A lot of you may know that attitudes about sex began to change more or less around the 1950s and were full swing by the 1960s. I'm a student at a Catholic school and hold a mix of the old sexual norms and the ones that we have now in this modern day and age. I just want to open up something so we can all talk honestly without using our own sexual experiences as reason to say yes, to say if society worldwide, or in the Western World has improved or gotten worst with the sexual revolution? Is it freedom or vice? EDIT: I would have a poll but I don't know how to set up a poll now that the thread's posted. |

| Take me on. | Honestly, I've always viewed humanity in general being heavily repressed in a sexual sense. Both sexes are pretty opressed by society in order to uphold a standard 'moral code', which typically goes against most of our sexual needs and desires, all of which happen naturally. So really, I'm all for the sexual revolution. Let's bring out the best of humanity, folks. |

America, however, is still seemingly Victorian in its views on sex. While it appears as though our society is bombarded by messages and images pertaining to sex, it's still very a rather taboo subject. We can suggest all the sexuality we want in our media, but we can never outright portray nudity or sex. Nipples and penises are evil to the FCC, and the majority of America agrees. It is because of way we try to downplay or even demonize sex that America is predisposed to obsessing over it. By trying to stifle our sexuality, we inadvertently fuel it but often with harmful results. You need look no further than those silly abstinence pledge rings. By overtly displaying that you refuse to have sex, you are ultimately sending out a sexual message. You tell everyone that you are not HAVING SEX FUCK YEAH. That's Victorian sexuality if I've ever seen it. EDIT: I highly recommend Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein for such a subject.

As Square Ninja already pointed out, talking about "humanity in general" might be too inaccurate, but as for the Western world, I always believed the fuss about sexual topics that some people made in the past was downright ridiculous, considering it's something so natural and substantial. Even though I respect Christians and their beliefs for the most part, I have to say I'm very glad that we've started to break free of the massive taboo-ness of it. Dirty and sinful, maybe. But hell, it's fun. Definitely freedom.
