I don't think I can honestly answer this question. I've had good friends become girlfriends, people I barely know become girlfriends, and people I really don't know become girlfriends. It all depends on if I'm attracted to personality, looks, etc.

Don't you usally try to find out about people before you date them, therefore you become to know them well?

I don't know if I have a complete answer for this.
Dating friends I could probably do, already had a crush on one of them. Would feel a little awkward but at least I already know them well. Then again, that can turn disastrous.
As for people I don't know, I'd at least want to have a little info about them before dating them.
