According to this quote, I'll fill in my opinion concerning the requirements of a country to be considered a "Western" nation.

1) Democratic government/ Government leading towards democracy or republicanism
2) High Gross Domestic Product (ie wealthy)
3) Happiness
4) Good Health

I'm just western Hemisphere vs. Eastern Hemisphere.

With some ambiguity involving Eastern Europe(especially Russia) and the Middle East.

So if china suddenly allows for human rights, they're a western nation? I'd say scrap that, western should be used like what it means, spanning both america and europe. If you mean first wirld countries, then your description fits.

I thought the rule of thumb was that "Western" states were states west of Russia that weren't Communist.

Polling has shown that people in Africa have a higher rate of happiness. Then again they probably didn't poll the ones suffering from disease, but the people who aren't are thankful for what they have, and haven't known anything better.

It makes sense though. People who have no knowledge of there being a better time are often unquestioning of their lifestyle. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't do anything to help.

The original post is more like a definition of the First World, which is not necessarily the same as the Western World, although there's a lot of overlap, "western" is a reference to the culture more than anything, while the nation's status as "first world", "second world", etc. is more concerned with the economy, although like I said, there's a lot of overlap going on.
