Then what if the chef, gardener, etc goes into a social setting to, say, go to a restaurant or, really, anything regarding interacting with others through talking? There's got to be some way for both parties to communicate with each other. And generally, it's by learning the dominant language.

You should, Europeans know about 4 or 5 languages so we Americans might as well learn English as well as Spanish, especially since Hispanic populations are on the rise (40 something million I think)

There are states out there with two official languages. All "official language" only pertains to legal documents, anyway. It doesn't force people into speaking the language.

I think that it should be the official language.
Pretty much everything one sees is English (signs, documents, etc)
Of course there are a lot of cultures here, but in order for everyone to co-exist in a single country, I think that it's important for everyone to be able to communicate with each other.
It's not like it would be the eradication of one's native language or anything.

I haven't witnessed the eradication of any languages lately.
Guess I just haven't been keeping up with the news.
...unless you're talking about Native Americans.
I wasn't aware that I was dealing with colonialism.
That's a totally different situation.
Providing people with the resources to communicate effectively with their fellow citizens =/= eradication of an entire ethnic group.

Then again, that would explain why no one speaks Spanish, German, Italian, French, Gaelic, Inuit, Swedish, Norwegian, or any form of Native American dialect. Seeing as they've been eradicted and whatnot.

EDIT: Sorry, I wasn't sure what Inuits actually spoke. Turns out it's just called Inuit.

And, not everyone becomes assimilated. I mean shit, if they did we wouldn't have two labels for everything.

Well because English is the predominant language so it is a de facto official language by which all groups in the US need to learn to survive
