Nope the United States does not have an official language.

English is just its most spoken one.

correct english is not the official language but they are tryin to make it become one, but look at the facts.
over 20 different languages are spoken in ohio alone but thats 1 of 50 states. there are over 100 in Calif.

We just did a debate like this in my ELP class. anyway I think that there should be a universal official language but it is helpful in many situations. I feel that people can speak what ever they want but there should be an official business language and an official language of law. This is just to secure certain things and to keep order, other then in those two areas I could care less weather or not English is official or not.

good point but as of right now anyone can do business or government action in any language they chose. Imagine a Microsoft like company that does everything in Spanish...

I personaly think that since English takes words from other languages that it should be the official language, just because of its many origons(sp?) It is probabily the easiest to understand for everyone in the world who only speaks one language.

I'd say yes...because if someone coming to this country doesn't have the decency to learn our language, then they really shouldn't be catered to.

it doesnt matter. We dont need an offical language. Why? Because it is the land of the free so you speak whatever you want. Of course alot of people rather have you speak english mainly because alot of business that have you interact with people requires the useage of the english language.

People say that America is the "melting pot" of cultures, many millions of immigrants from hundreds of different countries all come to America to experience the wonder of America, and therefore enriching the culture. Forcing them to adopt the English language involuntarily cripples them of job opportunities and a possible future. Let's make sure that these people are welcome, and show them that America is a free and open country to all people of all nationalities.
Also, by adopting English as the national and official language, that would mean that many people who cannot speak English would therefore need to be educated, and think about how much of a dent in the budget that would cause.

Though there's a few gaping holes in my argument. Just say it quickly and hope no one notices XD.
"Let's make sure these people are welcome..." - What about Mexicans?
"People who cannot speak English would need to be educated..." - They actually don't...
