Well Prod, you have effectively stated the obvious. =P

We're discussing love because we don't know what it is. This is why the thread was made.

If everybody agreed on one definition, well...

I personally have never seen so many takes on one word, but maybe I'm just not an avid fan of the dictionary. And yeah, some of them are pretty much identical... couldn't be bothered to mess around with it.

^That's a lot of definitions, lol.

Anyway, the main problem with the dictionary is that it's politically correct, giving only the currently accepted definition of the word. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the dictionary or anything. After all, it's not like they could do much else, because a dictionary should reflect the culture (the cultural meanings of words plays a large role in analyzing history). It just makes it hard to use it for what one could call the "true" or "original" meaning of a word.

Alright, smartass. ;P

Anyways, apart from the backfiring comments to my intentional state-the-obvious-sarcasm, I don't even mean as a common definition. A common definition that would involve the definitions of both a noun and a verb. I do in fact mean the point the this thread. Therein, what it is. Not what it means. What it is. That is my p01n7.

And no problem, kaz.

If you want to know what it is, and not what it means, then here it is:

Love...

Is a word.

It's also a feeling.

It's also something we make a big deal out of.

These are definitives that can be made, but other than that, the word Love was used to label something inexplicable. And even still, it is inexplicable. Still, when we say we love someone or something, no matter the context, we'll know what they're on about.

It's just nicer to say:

I love you.

As opposed to maybe:

I feel this profound, unexplained and somewhat troublesome emotion towards you, and for some equally unexplained reason, I hope you feel the same way.

Or

I love chicken.

Instead of:

At this current point in time I find chicken much more tasteful and satisfying than other foods, to the extent that it excites me when the notion of eating it comes to mind.

It's a real time saver.

^True, but this isn't really about the word's cultural relevance. Anybody can figure out, culturally, when and why we use a word. This more about trying to speculate what the original idea of love is supposed to be.

THIS IS NOT SMARTASS 101.

And on that note, poop on your cultural relevance. That does nothing to explain anything I asked. If it were how and where people use it, we'd have been done long ago.

No, I want the deep-rooted emotion. And not some silly bland thing. What it is. A detailed explanation. A series of theories and scientific evidence to blend into one true meaning of what the word is and was supposed to mean. Not I need someone to try and be smart so I can shoot them down.

...Any takers?

You got that right. Look around you and you see that 90% of the music we listen to and the movies we see are dedicated to love. What makes it so attractive? Why not sing about anger, or happiness (while there ARE songs that have those emotions in them, the majority of songs we listen to are love-related). After all, love is just another emotion.

Something interesting that I want to bring up is that the parts of the brain that react to 'love' are (mostly) the same areas as those which react to stimulation from drugs. So being in love is like being high, apparently. Bringing up a point made waaay at the beginning, love is what remains of the evolutionary urge to reproduce. The happy feeling is an incentive. Its all hormones.

Well Love is brought up so much in everyday life becasue people see others with it and they want it for themselves or they had it but lost it. And it really is something that most people can relate to.[/color]

That's partially true because even though you can get supposedly "high" on love, it's just a temporary feeling for something that you want to last. And it's not even an urge to reproduce...true, the happy feeling is an incentive buy hormones aren't the main factor in Love, it's really the mindset that people put themselves in to...most people think that they're in love, some aren't sure, and then there are those that literally let one feeling for someone overflow into what they call "love" and that ends up taking over their whole thinking process and how they go about everyday life...^^

Sowwy I didn't post to often before so I had to make up for it.....lolz.

I believe love is the act of two living beings merging together spiritually. I believe all living things exist as a collective spirit, and that love is the act of connecting two or more pieces of that collective spirit.

In short, I believe all living things should become one by collectively loving each other.
