I'm taking four A-Levels, all of which are work intensive, there's a lot of writing and hard work involved. I'm also taking a fifth, but there's not much to do for that one. I'm struggling to keep up in my classes, and I'm really worried that I'm not going to cope when the exam rolls around.
But, I miss being able to see my friends. The only way I can see them is for a little time at school, or if I scrape together some spare change to get a bus to see them. (They live out of walking distance, in the next town O.o) They're always talking about things they've been doing, that I can't cause I wasn't there. And it sucks.
So, my question is this. Do I get a job, leaving less time for schoolwork, but a little bit more time with my friends? Or do I continue working until the summer, when I can get a job?

| FTW! Friends are very important in our lives. Now, Schoolwork is important also, But you have 1 life, don't be crazy with schoolwork, spend more time with friends.

I spend ages on my homework and get good grades, but it takes everything out of me. I just don't have any energy left.
It seems my friends are never working as hard as I am at school. They get to have fun together while I'm stuck inside doing homework. I can't even see them when I'm free for once.
Hell, I'm doing homework as we speak! D:

I would say spend more time with your friends, I think it will pay off just as much in the long term - you will only be spending another year after this with all your school friends so make the most of it. Plus, it's not only the money that is an attractive prospect of having a job, it's the experience as well, which is vital.
Relax on the schoolwork a little. Last year I did the retarded thing of taking 6 AS Levels, but I managed to get an A in all of them, doing f*ck all apart from going out and being on internet. It's not all about how much time you spend on your work, it can still be easy to bluff when the exams come.
I just think you'd feel the impact of weakening the relationships you have with your friends more than a minor slip it your grades. I guess it all depends on whether you are aiming to get particular grades for a particular university.
...I am so sorry if this post doesn't make sense because I am ridiculously tired because it's some weird hour and I haven't sleep for ages. | |

With a job, you rarely get flexible hours and when it comes around to the real revision period for A Levels (which in theory should be Easter) then you should really be focusing on your studies, considering A Levels can make or break your future...Jobs are very stressful as well, and taking 4 A Levels must be stressful enough so you don't want to be bogged down in any more stress...
(This actually comes from experience, its a long story but i depended on friends over studies far too much last year (coupled with numerous injuries) and i'm repeating AS Levels because of it, don't waste your future over a case of a few months lost social time :))

I say that you should make time for friends, while not cutting out too much school.
If you devote yourself to school you'll probably earn (slightly) more money, but if you don't spend time with friends, doing what you love, then life won't be fun at all (not good).
At least until you're all grown up and that extra education has made a difference your life will be better, but by then the damage would have been done.
P.S. always challenge urslef, but dont push it too far.

I'm aiming for two C's and one B to get into University. But I'm predicted 2 A's and 2 B's so far. :3 It's definitely my friends that I'm more worried about right now. I hate not being able to see them. ;-; I'm noticing that they're slipping away from me, because I can never spend time with them. I'm sure they think I just don't want to see them, I'm always doing work because of that lethal cocktail of subjects I'm doing - they don't understand, because they took 100% exam subjects. (I hope that makes sense to everyone... i.e, no work until exam season D:) I know what you mean about bluffing exams, too, I always think I'm gonna fail, then come out with a good grade =/
I see what you mean about flexible working, Chaywa. But I have a friend (who isn't one I'm as close to, but a friend nonetheless) who works one day a week, and says I should work with him. They're short on staff right now, so that was the job I'm thinking of going for. Plus, what you said is kinda my reasoning behind not getting a job - missing out on a few months of social time is better than failing.
Thanks for all the help <3 *repped*

I've been talking to my mother, and we've agreed something between ourselves.
I already do work around the house (chores, bleh), but I'm going to be doing a lot more in order to get some money. (Don't laugh, I've never been allowed this before. She wouldn't even give me money before then. >.>;) So I'm working, but at home. And going over to relatives' houses to work there, too.
It's worth it, in my eyes. =) Problem solved. Thankyee <3

I did one year of them, got rubbish grades (that were passes, just not good ones) and decided that even if I stayed on for another year, I wouldn't be able to completely pull them back up. That was because I didn't put enough time into them. Even though I ended up luckily neting a very good job in tems of pay and oppurtunities it opens for the rest of my career, I could probably have gotte a better job with a set of full A Levels.
Out of interest, what subjects are you taking? I had Psychology, English Literature, Media Studies and General Studies. I dropped Maths after the first term because I couldn't keep up- again, I wasn't putting enough work in.
The most important thing to remeber, and my advice to you is to try your very best to keep up with everything.

Art (a pain in the ass, the most work of all), Media Studies, English Literature, RE: Philosopy and Ethics, and General Studies. I put absolutely ridiculous amounts of work into them all, especially Art and Media Studies.
Sorry to hear that, I can definitely understand why you chose to leave. I was thinking of dropping out after the first month of Sixth Form, I was convinced I wouldn't be able to do it... I'm gonna see how this year goes, apparently it's a walk in the park compared to A2 O.O;
Thanks for that advice.

I did well in the exams, but let myself down with coursework - if you are studying any of these I may be able to give you a few bits of advice for what the examiners want.

Hamlet - William Shakespeare
A Streetcar Named Desire - Tennessee Williams.
Poetry Anthology - Various
Hamlet and ASND are my favourites. <3
Thanks for the offer! :3 We don't do coursework though, which is a shame - I always get higher marks in that, exams aren't my thing...

I'd rather do coursework, it's more reassuring that way.
