- University of Manchester - French Studies (4 years)
- Salford University - Modern Languages and Translation & Interpreting [French/Italian]

Those are my applications to go to university in 2010. My final application was sent off on Nov 13 2009 and I received a letter on Friday from UCLAN, saying they have acknowledged my application and will soon be making offers. I want to know to those who have applied to universities in England using UCAS, how long it usually takes for acknowledgements to come in? And when offers are made? A few of my friends have had acknowledgements and some even have conditional offers, but does that depend on the university? If you could help, I'd be grateful.

By law, they're supposed to at least acknowledge your application. I've just checked my e-mail and I've had two more acknowledgements from The University of Manchester and The Languages School at The University of Salford. Both were sent on 20th Nov 2009, the same day I received my UCLAN letter. Quote:

Just have to wait for The Manchester Metropolitan University and Lancaster University (which is the one I want to get into). Quote:

In the e-mail from The University of Salford, there was an apology for lateness in my acknowledgement (technical problems or something). All I have to do now is wait for my two other acknowledgments to come through and then I can start worrying about offers & whatnot. I think I mentioned, in the OP, a few of my friends who'd had conditional offers? One of them was my friend Sophie, who found out today that she has an interview in two weeks with Cambridge University. That's saying something. But yeah, she probably got hers earlier since the prestigious British universities such as Cambridge, Oxford and Durham, etc., have a strict deadline of Sep 14th 2009 whereas everywhere else is pretty much mid-Jan 2010.
Fingers crossed.

You have an early deadline because they interview everyone around November/December, then offers come out a few weeks later.

I can't remember when I got my offers.
Was around this time last year I was doing it....but it seems so long ago.
All I can suggest is checking UCAS every day or so.

I got a conditional offer from The Manchester Metropolitan University, but the offer's pretty low so it's making me think that: a) they think little of me (even though I have top-end grades); b) I'm going to be put into a weak class (even though I am French); c) the university is shit. I told my pops about it and he said even though it's great that I got my first conditional, I should really think about applying elsewhere if the offer boundries were so low. They want a grade C in French, 160 points at least in A2s and 240 points all together. :/ I think you understand. Quote:

| Just checked my UCAS and I've got another conditional offer from UCLAN! Boundries are pretty low, still (in fact, even lower than MMU) at 200 points at A2, but I know for a fact that UCLAN Preston is brilliant for languages, and it's a 30 min train ride to the university. Plus, I'm familiar with Preston, the city's right on the doorstep of the university and I have a common 'culture', I guess you'd call it, with the Preston people.

I planned on going there but decided to go to Lincoln as they offered the better Media course.
I had to get 300 points which I was like D:
Got like 260 in the end and still got a place.
Preston? I think I know someone who goes there...not same subject though..

| Mhm, that's why I want to go to Lancaster because I think it has one of the best language departments in the country? I'd rather go there and come out with a good degree. I'm going to the upcoming Open Days for the unis so I'll have a bit more of an insight. Quote:

| Well, so far I have 150 points from my AS-Levels last year, 120 of which are from my French and Spanish ones (did really badly in my maths since I had a bad time at the end of the year with shit outside college), so I just need another 40 points from French and Spanish at A2 to fulfil one part of the MMU offer. But yeah, I think, if I pushed myself, I could end up coming out with like A* French A-Level (most marks are given in communication and accuracy, not actual language skills), A* Spanish A-Level, A Italian AS-Level and D Maths A-Level. So, like... 370 points. BUT it's worth trying, right?

What would you say about the uni? | Well I never ended up going to an Open Day. I looked at the prospectus and was like "yeah, this could be pretty sweet" but I ended up looking at other Uni's like UEA, Hertfordshire and Lincoln of course which I found to be better. But you know, different tastes. Quote: |

| Man points pissed me off.
Ecspecially when I found that my AS level points meant jack shit if I continued the course at A-Level. Well they did mean something as they went towards your A-Level grade...
I remember for my AS levels I got like B,C,D,E I seem to remember.
Then to find the E that I left behind only put my 20 points closer to my target was a punch to the face.

Practically everyone is asked for three As; even AAB is very unusual, and the real geniuses are the ones who get an offer of two Es or something. That's basically the university's way of saying, "We want you here, no matter what."
Congrats in any case :)
