In that case, I'd perhaps recommend the obscure film Les Bons Débaras, by...uh I forgot who it was. Personally, I hated every second of it, but you may be able to get something out of it.

Also, just to let you know, the language is very...jouale. I'm not sure what kind of French you speak, but if you're not that familiar with Québécois French you may have some trouble following.

I just Googled it and the director is Francis Mankiewicz. About a woman taking care of her simple-minded brother and something about a rebellious daughter? That's what IMDB is giving me. I'll add it to my list. Thanks, man.

I speak standard French, I suppose you'd call it? My parents and I are from Paris so I've grown up speaking standard French as well as English. Some of the Quebecois dialect might be a bit difficult for me to understand but I'll get the gist of it. Also, English subtitles will help me. Thanks a lot.

yeah that`s it. The movie focuses especially on the relationship between the mother and daughter. You should be fine with subtitles (I have the same problem as you except it's with French from France, lol). And glad I could help.

Don't go judging the book by its cover - The Orphanage is not that sort of horror. It has no gore at all, just psychological horror with a great little twist at the end, and it's very good. I've actually been meaning to go back and re-watch it for some time now.

Critics praised the film for its lack of cheap scares. Film critic for the Chicago Sun Times Roger Ebert praised the film claiming it to be "deliberately aimed at viewers with developed attention spans. It lingers to create atmosphere, a sense of place, a sympathy with the characters, instead of rushing into cheap thrills". Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic echoed this statement noting, "Bayona never lets The Orphanage descend into cheap horror. The scares here are expertly done and, placed in the context of Laura's state of mind, well-earned, perhaps even explainable (or not)."

(The Orphanage (2007 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

For French movies, I'll put in a vote for L'Auberge Espagnole - my French flatmate showed it to me a couple of months ago and I really enjoyed it.
