Default Maya, 3DS, Zbrush, and Mudbox CG rendering

So I have the two programs and I want to get started on working on making 3D models for paintings and short animations.
I was wondering if anyone else uses them or would like to learn with me on how to use them?

Maya was used in Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, etc. for the models and animation made in the game. I believe Square-Enix uses it in their animations and CG.
Mudbox was used to create examples like this:

Maya costs somewhere in the range of $1000-$4000. Dont know what mudbox is though. I've had some practice with Maya, and It's one of the most widely used programs for character and object models in the Gaming Industry.
If I can find some of my old renders I'll show you some of the basics made with Maya, Including my homemade KK

They are most definitely not freeware, and they are quite expensive (I believe upwards of $1,000, keep in mind, professional movie and game studios use these programs).

However if you know your way around the internet, you can score a "copy" of these programs. *cough*TPB*cough*
I am in love with Mudbox.
If I get used to it, I should be able to sculpt some pretty nice models soon.

I've used Blender somewhat in the past, but not much...Maya kind of totally confuses me...but Mudbox seems much easier to grasp.

Mudbox's purpose is almost solely to supplement programs like Maya. It focuses on actually building models of characters and objects, that you can import into Maya I'd assume.

Then tell me.
BTW I want to try out Zbrush. Epic used it to do their Gears of Wars models.
I want to see which one is better.
So far I'm having trouble with Mudbox's ability to sculpt things cleanly...I'm wondering if there's a way to increase the amount of polygons on the model so I can better sculpt.
