This was the first generation since Gold/Silver where i had to complete the story w/out a Pikachu in my party, and at least in gen 2 it was possible

You can catch Pikachu in Viridian Forest and also at the Power Plant so you could complete Gen 1 with him. He's kinda rare in Viridian forest however.

Yeah. You can pass down Dream World abilities if the parent is female. It doesn't work if it's male.

If a female Pokémon has a Hidden Ability and is bred, it has a 60% chance to give that Ability to each of its children. Hidden Abilities cannot be passed down from male or genderless Pokémon, or when breeding with Ditto.

Sneaky Sneaky spoiler ice. Maybe the ice in the sky is blocking the planes, and when you removed them by the end of the game you can fly to new/old areas :D
