The same thing happened with COD4 and WAW though. People were bitching and moaning about WAW but that was all forgotten once MW2 came out. Most of the Call of Duty fanbase prefers the high speed gameplay IW offers over the slow balanced gameplay Treyarch games have. The fact that the way we play multiplayer is expanded each game, makes me think the series has a longer lifespan than 2-3 years. However all things die eventually.
