"I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is a sardonic loveletter to the halcyon days of early American videogaming, packaged as a nail-rippingly difficult platform adventure. Players fill the role of The Kid, a youthful, vaguely Megaman-esque protagonist on a quest to become The Guy. This inscrutable plot, however, is just a vehicle for a wide variety of inventive, well-designed and frustrating jump-and-shoot challenges that pay homage to many of the games you loved as a child. The ever-fragile Kid explodes in a shower of red pixels at the slightest brush from the game's many obstacles, from traditional spikes and bottomless pits to more unconventional killers, such as plantlife and puzzle pieces.

Using a multiroute layout not unlike a Metroidvania, the game grants a degree of deadly exploration, without those extraneous upgades meant to make life easier. The game provides players with a choice in terms of their deathrate, thanks to a variable difficulty setting that changes the number of save points from frequent to nonexistent. IWBTG is open to all players; knowledge of videogaming history is optional, and may not help against the frequently ironic and always sadistic deathtraps located herein. And so, the question is left up to you...

Now, I finally decided to make a thread for this awesome game. The first thing that should be said, if you still haven't realized it yet, is that this game is damn hard. It's far morer punishing than any Super Mario Hack you've ever played. It may be hard to believe, but it's that hard. Most people don't even make it past the first few screens.

The story is fairly simple. You are 'The Kid', off on his epic journey to avenge the death of 'Former Grandfather The Guy', who was killed by 'The Guy'. By defeating The Guy, The Kid will then become The Guy.

It's that simple.

Now, why should you play a game that is going to make you go batshit insane? Simple. It's extremelly rewarding, fun, and, most of all, funny. The death's that you will have are often very original. You can die by Mario Paint Plane, from the falling moon, from a giant ass Mike Tyson, you name it.

NOTE:

THE RULES CONSTANTLY CHANGE IN THIS GAME. You will soon learn this. Once you think you have figured out how the game works, you will soon learn that THE RULES ARE NOT CONSTANT. They will constantly change on you. Expect the unexpected.

Now, are you interested in attempting this hard game? It's freeware, which means that it's free to download and play. It's still in it's beta though, so there are still some glitches. I would reccomend the slow mo version, as it has much fewer glitches than the frameskip version.

I'm definitely going to try to rack up some loser points by beating this game.

EDIT: I'm just playing the demo version, but how do you get past the wall/floor of spikes after the getting past the first screen?

Damnit, it's been over an hour and I still haven't gotten to a save point.

I was soooooooooooo close to getting to the save point right after the clouds, but I accidentally hit a spike while I was trying to jump on top off the metal thing that falls down.

I've heard so damn much about that game and I've never been able to find it (or was just too lazy). Pisses me off, because I hear it's goddamn brilliant.

On topic, I've played I Wanna Be The Guy. Spent nearly an hour on the first three or four screens (the second one with the apples is annoying) and gave up.

You should start a list of everyone who fell for the trick on the first screen. I call position number one, since I KNEW there was a trick to it, and I STILL tried to do it that way.

Heh, yeah, it's not that surprising you gave up. The thing is, you cannot play this game thinking that you can beat it without dying. In fact, the only way to get past a screen, is to have prior knowledge of that screen... Whichs means you have died at least once on said screen. It's the only way.

And yah, if more people have this problem, I'll make a list. For the lulz.

Which third screen? Like I said, from that first screen you start at in the game, you can actually go three different ways. Take a screenshot so I can see. :0
