we have multiple persona/smt game threads already but i'm making another one because I'm special and there isn't a thread for megaten in general

most people seem to already know what SMT is (considering that atlus includes that name in pretty much all of their localization's titles even though it wasn't there originally) but because i like to hear myself talk and for the sake of introducing them to people who might not know them already:

Megami Tensei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

basically megaten is a JRPG franchise developed and published by Atlus, with a distinct focus on the occult, religion, and philosophy, where you make contracts with demons and have them fight for you

Since the original Megami Tensei, the metaseries has branched out and developed several sub-series and standalone spinoffs, including Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, and most famously, the Persona series

Due to cultural differences and the presence of themes that might be controversial to western audiences (demons, heavy references to christianity that often portray it in a not so flattering light, sexual content, tc etc), the series did not have much prominence in the western market until the release of Persona 3, which was a great critical success for the series and helped bring the franchise into the limelight (probably partly due to the fact that starting with p3 atlus decided to go completely weeaboo bait with their games)

Persona 3 and its sequel, Persona 4 are both overall great games if you can overlook the weeaboo baiting(P4 especially, is widely considered to be the RPG of 08, despite being on the PS2 in a time where super hi def big budget games were the focus of many), but if those are the only ones you've played so far you're missing out

The first Persona game was recently remade for the PSP with an improved localization and a few extras; haven't checked it out yet, so I dunno how that turned out, but I'd say it's worth a look at least

Persona 2 was so big that it was split into two games, and the first persona 2 game, Innocent Sin, was never localized. A fan translation has since become available.

And that's just Persona. In 2004, Atlus released Shin Megami Tensei 3:nocturne for the PS2 (which is actually the "Director's Cut" version of the game, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne Maniacs), a notoriously difficult game which is hailed by some to be one of the greatest RPG's for the system. A new DS Megaten game, Devil Survivor, was released in June of this year.

Overall, Atlus has made a shitton of little know, little played Megaten games that are probably very much worth checking out.

tl;dr talk about demon summonan games (which can very well include but that aren't just persona)

When my PS2 was in good condition I played SMT: Nocturne a bit, but then got distracted by other games and never got to go far into the game.
