They may well have existed before KH1, they just won't be in Birth by Sleep.

The impression I got from the first game was that they naturally existed and Xehanort's experiment's brought them into this world, from which they began growing in number (and at this point, he began creating the Emblem Heartless). I very well could be wrong, but it looked to me like they naturally lived inside Kingdom Hearts (since it was continuously said that they seek to "return" to the heart of all worlds, which could mean that Kingdom Hearts is their natural home and habitat), but then again, it could also just be one "base of operations" of many, and there's no way to tell for sure.

Still, if my theory is right, that may imply that, in the KH universe, when a person dies naturally, their heart goes to Kingdom Hearts and becomes a Heartless, or at least the darkness in their hearts goes there (I'm probably wrong, but it may have been mentioned somewhere that hearts return to Kingdom Hearts after death or something like that, right? I'm so wrong, aren't I?). Pretty morbid for a game starring Donald Duck and Goofy.

Anyways, I agree with PMF 100%...
There is more evidence supporting that Heartless did not exsist during BBS than there is supporting that they had always exsisted...

Whether or not it be proved or disproved at this point is totally irrelevant, we won't know until Nomura decides to reveal it to us himself. Point is, the heartless are not in BBS. Be they existed or not doesn't matter as long as they aren't in the game. KH is a series where everything seems to tie up at the very end, as if you're trying to open a Christmas gift, but you have to untie the bow and unwrap the paper for the whole present to show in a neat, little package.

By the end of the series, we'll know what's going on...hopefully.

But why ponder these things? If you know too much about a game/movie/book before it's released, it kind of loses some of the zing you get from the mystery. Just wait upon the game, play it, and know then.

And if you are right, and the heartless did exist back then, then be happy. Honestly though, no theory can be proved with actual evidence at this point.

Will never know until Nomura says but for right now in simpler terms Darkness has always existed and the heartless was only formed once someone resided their heart to that darkness

After death, the body and heart are left behind and become just a corpse, according to the Secret Ansem Reports.

During BBS, the Heartless had not been discovered yet, therefore they do not show up.
AtW did not discover the Heartless until AFTER BBS.
Just because the Heartless do not appear in BBS, does not mean that they did not exist during this time!

Here's the way I see it:
Domestic violence didn't "exist" before the 70's. It was considered teaching your wife who was in command. Now, you go to jail for "teaching your wife."
Same principle goes for the Heartless in my mind. And anyway, TN has gone back on his statements before with KH, so he very well may do the same with BBS enemies.
