Not necessarily. Sora could have travelled from the future to the past, or the knights could have travelled from the past to the future.

Nomura states that it takes place in the past BUT in the future... something like that.

i think theyre like mercenaries. they only work for the sides with rewards for them. or theyre like the heartless. (but of course much smarter) they side with whoever is the strongest. then maybe at the end of the fight, the knight realizes Sora's strength and leaves because he would need his help later or something. or maybe there are two different sides of knights. like a war or something. I still think that whole statement is strange. It takes place in the past but in the future. Maybe it's just taking place in the present.

i heard/read some were that numora said that the knights defeat was important...i forgot ware though. i believe the knight is defeated.
